Midwestern State hosts Cameron, seeks sixth straight home win

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State opens a four-game homestand on Thursday night and renews the "Red River Rivalry" as Cameron visits D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Midwestern State is 7-10 overall this season with a 5-6 conference record. The Mustangs are looking to extend their home winning streak to six games, and they are 6-2 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum this season.

The Mustangs are coming off their first road win of the season after beating UT Permian Basin, 62-57, on Saturday afternoon.

Midwestern State is averaging 61.4 points per game and holding its opponents to 62.5 points per game this season.

Emillia Steele and Zarria Carter scored 14 points apiece in the victory at UTPB. Alyssa Hutterer added 11 points and Carisa Cortez finished with 10 points. Carter pulled down 13 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season., which is the most among NCAA Division II players.

Carter is leading the Lone Star Conference in both scoring and rebounding. The 6-0 senior from Mansfield, Texas, averages 19.9 points and 11.8 rebounds per game for the Mustangs. Carter is the 12th-leading scorer in NCAA Division II and the fifth-leading rebounder.

Carter also has the best field goal percentage in the LSC, hitting 53.8 percent of her shots. She is 135-of-251 from the field, leading the conference in field goals and attempts.

Kerbie Cash, who had eight rebounds and eight assists at UTPB, is the second-leading scorer for Midwestern State with 11.2 points per game, and she is second on the team with seven rebounds per contest. The freshman from Wylie, Texas, is averaging 12.8 points against LSC opponents while grabbing 8.1 rebounds in conference games.

Cash recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds against Angelo State last week, and she is third in the conference in double-doubles.

Carter and Cash are both among the LSC top-10 in free-throws made and attempted. Carter is 69 of 98 (70.4 percent), and Cash is 56 of 78 (71.8 percent). Carter has the most attempts from the foul line, and Cash has the sixth-most tries in the LSC.

The Mustangs have taken the most free-throw attempts per game in the conference with 20.4 and are shooting 68.6 percent from the free-throw line as a team.

The Mustangs are third in the league with 42.5 rebounds per game, which is 26th in the nation, and they are grabbing 15.2 offensive rebounds per game, which is second in the conference and 23rd among NCAA Division II programs.

Carisa Cortez is dishing out 3.1 assists per game, which is sixth in the conference, and she boasts the sixth-best assist-to-turnover ratio in the league at 1.18.

Midwestern State is forcing the fourth-most turnovers in the conference at 18.9 per game, and the Stangs are second in the league with 11.6 steals per game.

Carter leads the LSC with 44 total steals. Steele is fourth in the conference with 31 steals, and Calyssa Sevier is sixth in the league with 30 steals. Cash has 29 steals, which is eighth-most in the LSC.

The Mustangs are holding opponents to 35.5 percent shooting from the field, and 27 percent from 3-point range, which is the fourth-best 3-point percentage defense in the LSC.

Midwestern State is blocking 2.4 shots per game, and Carter is averaging 0.82 blocks per game, which is 10th in the league.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with Cameron, 51-35, and is 30-10 when hosting the Aggies, who lost their last visit to D.L. Ligon Coliseum, 68-56. Cameron won its last meeting with the Mustangs, 76-71, in the season finale at Aggie Gym last year.

Cameron is 2-13 overall this season but has not won a game since defeating Northwestern Oklahoma, 82-78, on Nov. 25. The Aggies are coming off an 83-76 loss to St. Edward's, which was their 11th straight defeat and dropped their conference record to 0-11.

The Aggies are scoring 60.9 points per game, and their opponents are scoring 69.8 points per game.

Shamika Smith is leading the Aggies with 14.9 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. The 6-1 center from Norman, Oklahoma, scored 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting and pulled down 13 rebounds in the loss to the Hilltoppers on Saturday. She also eclipsed 1,000 points in her career.

Smith is second in the conference with six double-doubles this season. She is the sixth-leading scorer in the LSC, and she is second in field goal percentage at 52.1 percent. She is also the third-leading rebounder in the conference.

Grace Alverson is the second-leading scorer for the Aggies with 11.8 points per game. The 5-5 senior guard is second in the conference with 2.5 3-pointers per game. She is seventh in the league with a 3-point shooting percentage of 32.2 percent.

The Aggies are fifth in the LSC with 7.1 3-pointers per game, and they are the fifth-best free-throw shooting team in the conference, converting 75.9 percent of their free-throw attempts.

Opponents are shooting 42.5 percent from the field against Cameron, and the Aggies are averaging 18.7 turnovers per game.

Midwestern State continues its homestand on Saturday afternoon against Oklahoma Christian. Tipoff is at 1 p.m.
