LSC leading scorers face off as MSU visits St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Midwestern State looks to remain unbeaten as they visit Lone Star Conference rival St. Mary's for a non-conference match at Sigma Beta Chi Field on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The Mustangs won all three matches in a recent homestand, defeating two ranked opponents — No. 14 Fort Hays State and No. 17 Southern Nazarene — before scoring a 2-1 victory over rival West Texas A&M at Stang Park on Wednesday night. Midwestern State is 4-0-2 to start the season.

Mere Escobar scored five goals during the homestand and is fourth in the nation among NCAA Division II players with seven goals, which leads the LSC. Escobar scored the game-winning goal against WT in the 89th minute, and the reigning D2CCA Ron Lenz National Player of the Year scored twice from the penalty spot in a 2-0 win over Southern Nazarene. He scored the Mustangs' first home goal of the season and finished with a brace against Fort Hays State.

The senior from Austin has 51 career goals at Midwestern State and is the third all-time leading goal scorer in the history of the program. Only Alvin Alexander and Kris Henderson have scored more goals wearing the Maroon & Gold. Alexander netted 58 goals from 1975-1978, and Henderson scored 58 goals from 1987-1990.

Escobar also has three assists, giving him 17 points through six matches. His point total leads the conference and is third-most in the nation.

Samuele Muroni is second on the team with three goals this season. Muroni scored the Mustangs' only goal in a 1-1 draw at Regis, netted the game-winner in a 3-1 victory over Fort Hays State, and he scored the first goal against West Texas A&M on Wednesday night.

Liam Pritchard assisted Muroni on the goal at Regis and leads the conference with four assists, setting up Escobar for three of his goals. The senior from England has the 14th-most assists in NCAA Division II men's soccer this season.

Redshirt freshman Skyler Krchnak assisted on Muroni's game winner against Fort Hays State and added another assist on the game winner against West Texas A&M.

The Mustangs are averaging 1.67 assists per match and 6.67 point per match, which makes MSU the conference leader in both categories.

Midwestern State has outscored its opponents, 15-8, and the plus-7 goal differential is tied with St. Mary's for the conference lead and is 26th in the nation.

Jakob Stone has made four starts as the Mustangs' goalkeeper and is 4-0-0 with one clean sheet. The senior from Anchorage, Alaska, is sporting a goals-against average of 1.25 and a .583 save percentage, and he has seven saves in five appearances.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with St. Mary's, 36-5-0, and won both encounters last season, including a 2-1 victory in San Antonio as Escobar and Max Gonzales scored for the Mustangs.

When the two sides met in the season finale at Stang Park last year, Muroni scored in the 27th minute, and Pritchard assisted on an Escobar goal in the 67th minute. MSU earned a 2-0 victory and became the first team in 21 years to run the table in the LSC.

St. Mary's is 4-1-2 this season and has a three-match winning streak following a 2-0 victory at UT Tyler on Wednesday night. The Rattlers are 3-0-0 at home this season, and they are 4-12-0 when hosting Midwestern State.

Gael Gallegos scored both goals in the victory at UT Tyler and is second in the conference with six goals, which is ninth-most in the nation.

The Rattlers have scored the second-most goals in the conference this season and are outscoring opponents, 11-4.

Sofian Maghouz leads the team with three assists, while Andrick Ferrer and Jamie Thompson each have two assists for the Rattlers.

Johnny Thurbin has been the St. Mary's goalkeeper for every minute of every match this season. The junior from England has a goals-against average of 0.57 and a save percentage of .810. Thurbin has three clean sheets this season.

Midwestern State opens conference play at St. Edward's on Wednesday afternoon. Kickoff at Lewis-Chen Family Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
