LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- Midwestern State closed the NCAA Division II South Central/West Regional tied for ninth Saturday at the New Mexico State University Golf Course.

The Mustangs logged team totals of 295, 288, and 291 to finish with a 22-over 874 to finish nine strokes out of fifth place.

"Nine strokes isn't a lot over four players in three rounds," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "This is a course that you have to make birdies on. We didn't do that. It is frustrating because there are teams heading to nationals that we beat all year."

The top five teams and two low individuals not on an advancing team qualified to compete in the NCAA Division II Championship set for May 21-25 at Orange County National Golf Club in Winter Garden, Florida.

Host Western New Mexico won the regional team championship, firing scores of 277, 289, and 284 for a 2-under, 54-hole total of 850.

The other advancing teams include Oklahoma Christian and Colorado Christian, which tied for second with a even-par totals of 852, while West Texas A&M (854/+2) and California State-Monterey Bay (865/+13) finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Colorado Christian's Dylan Arthur claimed individual medalist honors, firing scores of 72, 65, and 67 for a 9-under 204.

Meanwhile, UT Permian Basin's Sangha Park (67-73-77) and Academy of Art's Giulio Zanichelli (68-70-69) advanced as individuals by tying for third with 6-under totals of 207.

Oklahoma Christian's Leandro Mihaich finished as runner-up, carding tallies of 69, 67, and 70 for a 7-under 206.

Senior Robert Garcia led Midwestern State's efforts by tying for 21st with scores of 70, 70, and 75 for a 2-over 215, while fellow senior Keaton Dickens delivered the Mustangs' low score in the final rounds, closing the tournament tied for 42nd with scores of 79, 69, and 71.

Junior Gatlin Goad (72-74-73) also tied for 42nd, while junior Trevor Walsh (76-75-74) tied for 71st with a 12-over total of 225.

Sophomore Seth Bearden (77-76-73) tied for 78th with a 13-over tally of 226.
