ARLINGTON, Texas -- Midwestern State is the No. 1 seed in the Lone Star Conference Men's Tennis Championship and tangles with No. 8-seed Western New Mexico in the quarterfinals at Arlington Tennis Center. The action begins Thursday at noon.
Midwestern State had an eight-dual winning streak snapped with a 4-3 loss at Cameron on Sunday. MSU finished the season with a 12-8 overall record while going 7-1 in in the Lone Star Conference.
The Mustangs have claimed the doubles point in 13 of their dual matches this season and claimed the first point in seven conference victories this season.
Luis Diaz Argente and
Stephen Slocombe, ranked No. 3 in the nation as a doubles team, are 13-4 at No. 1 doubles for the Mustangs. MSU is 20-4 in its last 24 doubles matches and 34-20 for the season.
Diaz, ranked No. 38 in the nation among NCAA Division II singles players, won seven of his last nine singles matches. The senior from Madrid, Spain, is 10-7 in singles overall and 7-5 in the No. 1 position for the Mustangs. Diaz is 3-3 against nationally ranked opponents this season after suffering a 6-7 (4), 4-6 loss to No. 37-ranked Louis Boilevin of Cameron on Sunday.
Slocombe has won seven of his last 10 singles matches and is 10-8 overall in singles with a 4-5 record at No. 3 singles.
Germano Setti had a six-match winning streak snapped with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-7 (3) loss to 62nd-ranked Egor Shestakov of UT Tyler, but the sophomore from Brazil rebounded with back-to-back wins at Arkansas-Fort Smith and Cameron. Setti has won eight of his last 10 singles matches for the Mustangs.
Setti has teamed up with
Killian Guillou at No. 2 doubles. The tandem is 7-1 in conference play and 11-7 overall this season.
Philip Kamara from Romania is 10-7 overall in singles matches this season with a 5-3 record against conference opponents..
Charles Heffernan improved to 5-0 in his return to dual match action with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 win over Rhys Edwards of Cameron.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with Western New Mexico, 10-1, including a 7-0 victory in Silver City earlier this month. Midwestern State won the doubles point in a little more than a half hour, and Diaz clinched the dual match with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Javier Romero in a mere 94 minutes. Setti handled Romaine Malhomme, 6-3, 6-2. Slocombe scored a 7-5, 6-4 win over Alexandre Frigout. Guillou was pushed to three sets but defeated Brendan Lock, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Kamara bested Lorenzo Orellano, 6-4, 6-2, and
Juan David Duque chalked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Mohjit Grewal.
Western New Mexico is 5-16 overall with a 1-7 record in the LSC this season. WNMU has lost its last six dual matches after defeating Dallas Baptist on March 23, 4-3. The Western Mustangs are coming off a 5-2 loss to St. Mary's at WNMU Tennis Courts on Friday.
The winner of Thursday's dual match meets either Lubbock Christian or Cameron in the semifinals on Friday at 1 p.m.
