Midwestern State's sensational round not enough in 3-2 loss to Oklahoma Christian

THACKERVILLE, Oklahoma -- Midwestern State delivered three, 3-under rounds of 69 in the Lone Star Conference Medal Match Semifinals against Oklahoma Christian Wednesday afternoon at the WinStar Golf Club's Scissortail Course.

The Mustangs also amassed 21 birdies and Seth Bearden "hooped in" a 143-yard eagle on a one-hopper on the par-4, 442-yard 14th Hole. If it were a normal team round, MSU would have posted a stellar 8-under total.

But it wasn't to get past Oklahoma Christian, who also had three golfers score in the 60s on the way to taking a 3-2 win in medal match play.

The Eagles moved on to face Dallas Baptist in the finals after the Patriots survive Western New Mexico by a single stroke in a tiebreaker after the teams tied, 2-2-1.

Midwestern State junior Trevor Walsh carded five birdies on the way to a 1-over 73 to take a one-stroke win over Vertti Perala in the first matchup, but Oklahoma Christian would claim the next three.

Senior Robert Garcia used a stellar run with three birdies and eight pars over an 11-hole stretch before taking a bogey on the final hole to finish with a 3-under 69. The senior from Lewisville totaled five birdies, but came one stroke shy of Oklahoma Christian's Oskari Nikku.

Senior Keaton Dickens carded a pair of birdies on the way to a 2-over 74, but OC's Exequiel Rodriguez finished with a 3-under 69 to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage.

MSU's Gatlin Goad turned in a brilliant performance against LSC individual champion Leandro Mihaich. The junior from Wheeler, Texas, had a clean card with four birdies over his first 15 holes before taking consecutive bogeys. He closed the round with his fifth birdie of the day on the final hole to finish with a 3-under 69.

But that left just enough room for Mihaich to close out the win for OC with a 4-under 68.

Bearden notched MSU's second win of the day in the final pairing, logging an eagle and three birdies for a 3-under 69 to win by four strokes over Blas Ayesa.

Midwestern State finished runner-up during the stroke play portion of the LSC Championships with a 1-over, 54-hole total of 865, while Bearden earned all-tournament accolades, logging scores of 69, 72, and 71 for a 4-under 212.

Walsh recorded his best individual finish of the season by tying for ninth with an even-par 216.

The Mustang await selection into the NCAA Division II West/South Central Region Championship set for May 9-11 at the New Mexico State University Golf Course in Las Cruces. Selection for the field will be announced on Friday, April 26.
