LAWTON, Oklahoma -- No. 14-ranked Midwestern State clinched the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Lone Star Conference Men's Tennis Championship with its 5-2 win at Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday. The Mustangs wrap up the regular season and look to remain unbeaten in the LSC as they visit Streich-Henry Tennis Complex for a dual match with Cameron at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Midwestern State has an eight-dual winning streak and has improved its overall record to 12-7 while going 7-0 in in the Lone Star Conference.
The Mustangs have claimed the doubles point in 13 of their dual matches this season and have claimed the first point in all seven conference duals.
Luis Diaz Argente and
Stephen Slocombe, ranked No. 3 in the nation as a doubles team, are 12-4 at No. 1 doubles for the Mustangs. MSU is 19-2 in its last 21 doubles matches and 33-18 for the season.
Diaz, ranked No. 35 in the nation among NCAA Division II singles players, is the reigning Lone Star Conference Player of the Week. Diaz has won seven of his last eight singles matches, The senior from Madrid, Spain, is 10-6 in singles overall and 7-4 in the No. 1 position for the Mustangs. Diaz is 3-2 against nationally ranked opponents this season.
Slocombe has won seven of his last nine singles matches and is 10-6 overall in singles with a 4-3 record at No. 3 singles.
Germano Setti had a six-match winning streak snapped with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-7 (3) loss to 62nd-ranked Egor Shestakov of UT Tyler, but the sophomore from Brazil rebounded on Friday afternoon with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Juan Rosello of UAFS. Setti won a match in straight sets for the fifth time in six outings.
Setti has teamed up with
Killian Guillou at No. 2 doubles to win seven consecutive matches for the Mustangs. The tandem is 7-0 in conference play and 11-6 overall this season.
Philip Kamara from Romania is 10-6 overall in singles matches this season.
Charles Heffernan improved to 4-0 in his return to dual match action with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kevin Praphan of UAFS at No. 6 singles. Heffernan has won three matches in straight sets.
Cameron is 6-9 overall this season with a 4-3 record against LSC opponents. The Aggies are 2-2 at home this season after suffering a 4-3 loss to Lubbock Christian in Lawton on Friday.
Midwestern State is 31-29 all-time against Cameron, but the Aggies have won the last three dual matches, including a 4-1 win in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Men's Tennis Championship in Arlington, Texas, last year. The Mustangs are 6-15 all-time when visiting the Aggies. MSU lost its last visit, 6-1, in March of 2021.
Louis Boileven is ranked No. 44 in the nation but is coming off a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 2-6 loss to 49th-ranked Martins Abamu of Lubbock Christian on Friday. Boilevin is 8-7 overall in singles and 3-3 against LSC opponents. Boileven has played exclusively at No. 1 singles this season.
Boileven is 8-5 in doubles this season. In the last six dual matches he has played alongside Guilherme Cruz at No. 2 doubles. The tandem fell to 4-2 with a 7-5 loss to Mattia Ghedin and Blas Ruiz Romero of Lubbock Christian on Friday.
Martin Hlavacek won his third consecutive singles match with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Tristan Vigneron of Lubbock Christian at No. 2 singles on Friday. Hlavacek improved his singles record to 7-8. The sophomore from the Czech Republic has won four of his last five doubles matches, playing alongside Alexander Post. The duo defeated Abamu and Vigneron at No. 1 doubles on Friday, 6-3.
Cameron had won the doubles point in five consecutive duals before succumbing to Lubbock Christian on Friday. The Aggies have won the doubles point in five of seven duals against LSC opponents. Cameron is 23-15 overall in doubles matches this season.
The Lone Star Conference Men's Tennis Championship is scheduled to be played April 25-27 at Arlington Tennis Center.
