TYLER, Texas -- Midwestern State suffered its first dual-match loss of the season at the UT Tyler Invitational as No. 19-ranked Auburn-Montgomery squeaked past the Mustangs at Summers Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon, 4-3.
The dual-match was decided by three-set matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Ane Ibarra handed
Skylar Minns her first loss of the season at No. 5 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 0-6, and pulled the Warhawks even with the Stang Gang at 3-3 in the dual match.
After dropping the first set to Sofia Neri, 5-7,
Micaela McSpadden leveled the match at No. 6 singles with a 6-2 victory in the second set, but Neri clinched the dual-match for UAM with a 6-0 triumph in the decisive third set.
The loss dropped MSU to 3-1 for the season, but
Anda Ghinga remains undefeated after a 6-7, 6-2, 1-1 (retired) victory over Ana Villavazo at No. 3 singles.
Jessica Binzari played her third three-set match in four starts at No. 1 singles and suffered a 6-0, 2-6, 2-6 loss to Estefania Garcia.
Hannah Yip improved to 3-1 for the campaign with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Melissa Yakup Pour at No. 2 singles.
Freshman Sophia Giraldo scored her second win in three matches at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Nahia Izco.
Auburn Montgomery opened the dual-match by conquering the doubles point. Garcia and Ibarra won No. 1 doubles, 6-1, over Binzari and Ghinga.
Yip and
Sarah Mazaraki earned their second win as a duo, defeating Neri and Yakup Pour, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles.
Izco and Villavazo secured the point with a 7-5 win over McSpadden and
Sydney Williams at No. 3 doubles, 7-5.
Midwestern State faces West Florida on Sunday afternoon in its final dual match at the UT Tyler Invitational. First serve at Summers Tennis Center is slated for 1:30 p.m.
