ARLINGTON, Texas -- Midwestern State rallied to put an end to a six-match slide, while handing Hawaii Pacific its first loss of the season -- 4-3 -- Monday afternoon at the Arlington Tennis Center.
The Mustangs won the last three singles matches on the way to improving to 5-7 on the season.
The Sharks (8-1) rolled out to a 3-1 advantage after claiming the doubles point, followed by wins by Paul Johannes -- 6-4, 6-3 over
Philip Kamara -- at No. 6 and Jim Walder -- 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 -- at No. 3.
But junior
Stephen Slocombe put MSU on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mile Matic at No. 4, then the Mustangs battled to take three split-set matches to win for the first time since beating No. 19-ranked Auburn-Montgomery on March 2.
Freshman
Bruno Sanchez pulled the Mustangs to within 3-2 by taking down HPU's Riku Ogasawara 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5, then junior
Germano Setti drew the match even with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win over Jakub Beran at No. 2.
Senior
Luis Diaz Argente delivered the clincher with a 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 win over over Robin Sanz at No. 1.
Midwestern State opens Lone Star Conference play against No. 17-ranked Lubbock Christian Wednesday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
