No. 5-ranked MSU cruises to fourth-straight win at Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- No. 5-ranked Midwestern State (7-2) moved up eight spots in the NCAA Division II ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings and won its fourth consecutive dual match on Wednesday. The Mustangs rolled past Rollins at Copeland Stadium, 4-2.

Midwestern State bageled the Tars in two doubles matches and won the first point of the day.

Jessica Binzari and Anda Ghinga defeated Polina Ligay and Polina Vlasova, 6-0, at No. 1 doubles. Sophia Giraldo and Sydney Williams breezed past Milla Falster and Eve Wasil, 6-0. Hannah Yip and Sarah Mazaraki won No. 2 doubles, 7-5, over Nancy Liu and Erin Yaroshuk.

Giraldo also hung a bagel on her opponent at No. 4 singles, defeating Nina Mitrofanova, 6-0, 6-4. The freshman has a four-match winning streak in singles and has won her last three matches in straight sets. The Colombian has only lost 11 games in that span.

Anda Ghinga improved to 9-0 this season as she defeated Ligay, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. Ghinga, a junior from Romania, is ranked No. 33 among NCAA Division II singles players in the latest ITA rankings released on Wednesday. The nine-match winning streak is the longest of her collegiate career.

Williams made her second appearance at No. 6 singles this season, and the junior from Austin, Texas, clinched the dual-match victory with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) triumph over Yaroshuk.

Yip, ranked No. 52 by the ITA, had a three-match winning streak snapped with a 2-6, 2-6 loss at No. 2 singles to Katie Groves. Yip is 6-3 in singles with a 5-1 record in doubles. The junior from Malaysia and Mazaraki have a three-match winning streak in doubles.

Falster earned the second point for Rollins at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Micaela McSpadden, who is 3-3 in singles matches for the Mustangs this season.

Binzari, who improved to 5-2 in doubles alongside Ghinga, did not finish her match with Vlasova at No. 1 singles after winning the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (5). Binzari is ranked No. 46 in the latest ITA rankings.

Midwestern State concludes its road trip to Florida on Friday with a dual match at Flagler in St. Augustine. First serve is scheduled for 9 a.m. CDT at Pollard Tennis Center.
