WINTER PARK, Fla. -- No. 13-ranked Midwestern State continues its Spring Break road trip on Wednesday with a dual match against Rollins. First serve at Copeland Stadium is scheduled for 9 a.m. CDT.
The Mustangs look to extend their dual-match winning streak to four after posting a 4-3 win over No. 23-ranked Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Tuesday, improving to 6-2 for the season.
Hannah Yip and
Anda Ghinga pulled out three-set victories for MSU in singles, and
Sofia Giraldo waltzed past Carla Cabero del Hierro of Embry-Riddle at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
Yip won her third consecutive match, defeating 31st-ranked Maja Issler at No. 2 singles, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. The junior from Malaysia is 3-0 in three-set matches and improved to 6-2 overall this season.
Ghinga remains undefeated in eight singles matches this season. The junior from Romania rebounded after losing the first set to defeat Laura Cuesta Bret at No. 3 singles, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Ghinga is 8-3 in three-set battles during her career at Midwestern State.
Giraldo is 5-2 in her freshman campaign and has won four matches for the Mustangs at the No. 4 position.
Midwestern State has won the doubles point in three of its eight dual matches, including a triumph to start the day at Embry-Riddle. The Stang Gang is 9-12 in doubles matches this season.
Jessica Binzari and Ghinga improved to 4-2 at No. 1 doubles this season with a 6-2 victory over Itxaso Blanco and Laura Cuesta Bret at Embry-Riddle.
Yip and
Sarah Mazaraki clinched the point in Daytona Beach, Florida, by defeating Issler and Carla Cabero del Hie, 6-4. Yip and Mazaraki are 3-1 at No. 2 doubles this season.
Rollins leads the all-time series, 2-1, but Midwestern State won its last meeting with the Tars in 2018. The two schools clashed at Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, and the Mustangs prevailed, 6-3.
Midwestern State is making its third visit to Winter Park. In 2012, Rollins posted a 5-4 victory over MSU, and a year later the Tars defeated the Mustangs, 9-0.
Rollins is 4-6 this season with a 2-5 record at Copeland Stadium. The Tars are coming off a 4-2 loss to No. 32-ranked Mississippi College. Rollins has lost four of its last six matches but has wins over No. 18-ranked Charleston and No. 4-ranked Saint Leo during that span.
Polina Vlasova, a senior from Germany, has four straight matches at No. 1 singles for Rollins after starting the campaign 0-4, including a three-set loss to Maja Jung of Washburn. Itxaso Blanco of Embry-Riddle defeated Vlasova, 6-2, 6-1, in her first match of the season.
Nancy Liu is 5-4 in singles matches for the Tars, but the freshman from Mongolia was forced to retire from her last match against Emma Roberts of Mississippi College at No. 2 singles on Monday due to an injury.
The Tars are a combined 11-17 at positions No. 3 - No. 5. Nino Mitrofanova, a fifth-year senior from Conroe, Texas, has a 3-0 record at No. 5 singles, and Milla Falster has a 2-0 mark at No. 3 singles but has not played in that position since a 7-0 win over Bates on Feb. 21.
Rollins has only won the doubles in three of its dual matches, and the Tars are 10-19 in doubles matches this season. Rollins is 1-8 at No. 1 doubles with Vlasova and Polina Ligay earning a 6-2 victory against Jung and Lara Schmid of Washburn of Feb. 27.
Midwestern State concludes its road trip to Florida on Friday with a dual match at Flagler in St. Augustine. First serve is scheduled for 8 a.m. CDT.
