MSU meets Rollins on Spring Break road trip

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- No. 18-ranked Midwestern State makes its second stop in the Sunshine State to face No. 15-ranked Rollins at Copeland Stadium on Wednesday at 1 p.m. CDT.

Midwestern State, which is 4-5 this season, hopes to end a streak of four consecutive losses in dual matches and is coming off a 4-3 loss to Embry-Riddle on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles won four of the six singles matches, but Stephen Slocombe snapped a four-match losing streak with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Fernando Alonso at No. 4 singles.

Germano Setti ended a three-match skid as he rallied for a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 win over No. 25-ranked Joshua Nuyts at No. 2 singles.

The Mustangs have won the doubles point in five of eight dual matches and are 14-10 in doubles matches this season.

The 13th-ranked duo of Slocombe and Luis Diaz Argente is 6-1 with its only loss coming at Southeastern Oklahoma on Feb. 24. Slocombe and Diaz have reeled off four-straight wins at No. 1 doubles, including a 6-3 victory over Michele Iftimie and Joshua Nuyts of Embry-Riddle on Tuesday as the Mustangs took the doubles point.

Rollins leads the all-time series, 2-1, but Midwestern State won its last meeting with the Tars in 2018. The two schools clashed at Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, and the Mustangs prevailed, 5-4.

Midwestern State is making its third visit to Winter Park. In 2012, Rollins posted an 8-1 victory over MSU, and a year later the Tars defeated the Mustangs, 7-2.

Rollins is 10-1 this season with a 9-0 record at Copeland Stadium. The Tars rebounded from their first loss of the season by defeating No. 4-ranked Mississippi College on Monday, 4-2. Rollins was coming off a 5-2 loss to No. 3-ranked Saint Leo in a Sunshine State Conference clash on Saturday.

The Tars are facing their fourth ranked opponent in a two-week span, and the Mustangs are tangling with a Top-25 foe for the sixth time in 12 days.

Nico de Giacomo is 7-0 for Rollins in singles this season. The freshman from Austria opened the campaign with a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Florida National and has won four matches at No. 3 singles for the Tars, including a 6-2, 1-6, 10-6 victory over Nicolas Bacella of Saint Leo. de Giacomo also has a win at No. 2 singles for the Tars.

Efe Comu is 6-3 at No. 1 singles for Rollins, and Guillermo Castaneda boasts an 8-2 singles record in dual matches, including a 5-1 record in the No. 5 position. Charlie Putrino and Luke Quaynor are both 6-2 in singles matches for the Tars, who are 43-14 in singles matches and have a winning record in all six positions.

The Tars earned the doubles point in all 10 of their victories this season and have a cumulative record of 25-5 in doubles matches.

Midwestern State concludes its road trip to Florida on Friday with a dual match at Flagler in St. Augustine. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. CDT.
