WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- After playing its first six conference games on the road, Midwestern State will be at Mustangs Park for a three-game series against Cameron. The Red River rivals play a doubleheader on Friday, beginning at 2 p.m., and the series concludes with a game on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Midwestern State (2-13, 0-6) closed out its road trip earlier this week at Lubbock Christian.
Allie Monroe opened the series by hitting two home runs in a 7-3 loss at Maner Park on Tuesday. In the doubleheader on Wednesday, junior first baseman
Myranda Jimenez had her first multi-hit game for the Mustangs with a single in the fifth and a base hit up the middle in the seventh inning of the first game, but the Lady Chaps prevailed, 3-0. Lubbock Christian closed the series with a 9-1 victory in the nightcap.
Camile Nunez finished the doubleheader 2-for-6 and was the only Mustang to get a hit in both games.
Freshman pitcher
Addison Lindemann threw 11 1/3 innings at Lubbock Christian and struck out nine Lady Chaps in her two appearances. Lindemann started the series opener and threw her third complete game of the season, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts. The freshman from Holliday, Texas, worked 5 1/3 innings of relief in the final game of the series and yielded six earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
Allie Monroe is hitting .386 with four multi-hit games and leads the Mustangs with a .659 slugging percentage. Monroe has three doubles and three home runs. The sophomore from Lawton, Oklahoma, leads the team with 14 RBIs, which matches her total from last season. She has at least one hit in 11 of her 15 appearances this season.
Nunez, a senior shortstop, has at least one hit in 11 of 15 games with three doubles for the Mustangs and is hitting .267. Nunez has 32 put outs and a team-leading 38 assists on 78 chances at shortstop. The transfer from Texas A&M-Commerce has turned five double plays for the Mustangs, who lead the conference and are second in the nation with eight twin killings through 15 games.
Freshman
Paige Gallegos has been playing primarily in right field and is hitting .244 through 15 games. Gallegos was 3-for-9 with a double and an RBI in the three-game series at Angelo State last week. The native of Iowa Park, Texas, is second on the team with five RBIs.
Maegan Shannon, a sophomore from Frisco, Texas, has started 12 games at third base and is hitting .235 with eight singles and two RBIs. Shannon has only committed two errors on 37 chances at the hot corner.
Megan Ayala has been the starting catcher for 14 games this season and has not committed an error with only three passed balls. She has thrown out five of 11 potential base stealers. At the plate, the sophomore from Denton, Texas, is hitting .207 with two RBIs for the Mustangs.
Freshman pitcher
Elizabeth Uhl (1-3) from Arvada, Colorado, has a 3.65 ERA through 15 1/3 innings, allowing eight earned runs on 19 hits with five walks and nine strikeouts. Her longest outing of the season came at Mustangs Park, where she lasted 6 2/3 and took a hard-luck 4-2 loss to East Central, which plated three unearned runs in the seventh inning.
Lindemann (0-5)Â leads the pitching staff with 28 strikeouts through 40 1/3 innings. Lindemann has made seven appearances with four starts and has a 4.17 ERA. She has allowed 45 hits with 18 walks and 24 earned runs.
Kennedy Cameron (0-3), a senior pitcher from Longview, Texas, has made five starts for Midwestern State this season and has a 3.85 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .236 against Cameron, who has allowed 21 hits over 23 2/3 innings. The right-hander has walked 20 batters and struck out 22. Cameron worked 3 2/3 innings in the second game at Lubbock Christian and allowed one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Sydney Gonzales (1-1) has been extremely effective as a relief pitcher for the Mustangs. Gonzales has made seven appearances with one start and thrown 11 innings, allowing nine hits and five earned runs. The sophomore from Lenorah, Texas, has a 3.18 ERA and is holding opponents to a .225 batting average. She has issued 10 walks with three strikeouts.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Aggies, 38-30, but Cameron swept a three-game series in Lawton, Oklahoma, last season. Jossie Swafford threw a one-hitter, and the Aggies won the series opener last season, 7-0, at McMahon Field. Monroe and Shannon hit back-to-back home runs in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Aggies won in five innings, 10-2. Monroe homered and delivered an RBI double in the final game of the series, but Cameron scored an unearned run in the seventh inning to win, 8-7.
The Mustangs are 21-12 when hosting the Aggies and have won three of the last four meetings at Mustangs Park. Cameron has not played MSU south of the Red River since splitting a doubleheader in March of 2021. Midwestern State won the first game, 4-3, and the Aggies took the nightcap, 3-0. The Mustangs took two of three games at Mustangs Park when the two schools met in 2019.
Cameron (5-5, 2-4) is playing its first true road games of the season. The Aggies went 3-1 at Wichita Falls Sports Complex during the Mustang Round-Up earlier this month, defeating Northwest Missouri State (9-0), Southwestern Oklahoma State (5-1) and Northwestern Oklahoma State (4-0) in neutral site games before falling to Fort Hays State, 1-0.
The Aggies were home for their first six conference games. TWU defeated Cameron, 5-0 and 3-1, before Rylee Ross went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, and Stormee Reed struck out seven Pioneers in a 10-0 victory to close out the series.
After losing the series opener to UT Tyler, 10-7, the Aggies scored a 4-2 victory in the middle game of the series. Kaiden Boren hit a three-run homer, Savannah Pemberton was 2-for-3 with a run scored in the victory. The Patriots closed out the series with a 9-0 victory in the second game of the doubleheader at McMahon Field in Lawton on Wednesday.
Ross is hitting .407 with eight RBIs to lead the Aggies, who have outscored their opponents in 10 games, 40-31. Kelsey Creech, who is hitting .333, has hit two home runs and is slugging .800 with seven RBIs in eight appearances. Taylor Rowley is tied with Ross for the team lead with three doubles and is hitting .379 through 10 games. Boren, who hit .333 last season and led the Aggies with 31 RBIs, is hitting .303 with four RBIs and has a homer and a triple this season.
Ross is 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts to lead the Aggies, who have swiped 11 bases on 15 attempts as a team. Reed has made four starts in the circle for Cameron and 2-0 with a 3.28 ERA. She has allowed 10 earned runs on 23 hits in 21 1/3 innings, striking out 17 and walking six. Opponents are hitting .267 against Reed in five appearances.
Jocelyn Bright has also made four starts with five appearances and has thrown 27 2/3 innings, allowing 18 earned runs on 29 hits with 19 strikeouts and 14 walks. Opponents are hitting .266 against Bright, who is 2-2 with a 4.55 ERA.
Tinley Schmidgall is 1—1 in two starts and has not allowed an earned run in 15 1/3 innings. Schmidgall has recorded nine strikeouts and only issued two walks. She has held opponents to a .111 batting average in her three appearances. The junior from Yuma, Arizona, has the best WHIP in the Lone Star Conference and ninth-best in the nation at 0.52.
Cameron's pitching staff is fifth in the conference and 45th in the nation with a team WHIP of 1.25.
The Aggies have committed five errors in 266 chances, and their .981 fielding percentage is second in the LSC — 13th nationally. Cameron has turned four double plays, which is fourth-most in the conference.
Emma Johansen is in her second season as the head coach at Cameron. She came to Cameron after spending four seasons as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II West Florida. During her time there, the Argos made a pair of NCAA Championship Appearances, won the regional and super regional in 2019 as well as the Gulf South Conference Championship. She was a contributor to the Regional Coaching Staff of the Year in 2019. The Aggies were 31-25 last season, and Johansen is 36-30 in her tenure at Cameron.
Brittanie Talley is beginning her third season as the head coach at Midwestern State and is the third coach in the history of the program. Talley amassed a 129-75 record (.632) over five seasons at Vernon College earning Texoma NexStar Small College Coach of the Year honors in 2021 after leading the Chaps to a 42-12 mark and advancing to the NJCAA regional tournament.
Midwestern State is back home on Tuesday to begin a three-game series against West Texas A&M. First pitch is at 5 p.m. The two schools will play a doubleheader on Wednesday at Mustangs Park, and the action begins at 1 p.m.
