TYLER, Texas -- Noah McDavid hit a dagger 3-pointer with 55 seconds left to put Midwestern State up by seven points, and the Mustangs earned a 62-52 win over UT Tyler Friday night at the Herrington Patriot Center.
The Mustangs (6-2, 3-1 LSC) had three players score in double figures, led by Will Shepherd and Mason Gibson, who had 12 points each, Pierre Sanders chipped 10 more.
The win snapped a seven-game skid in Lone Star Conference road games for the Mustangs. It was the first LSC win away from D.L. Ligon Coliseum since MSU held on for a 79-77 victory at Arkansas-Fort Smith on January 25.
UT Tyler suffered its second consecutive setback to fall to 3-5 on the season, while dropping to 0-2 in league play.
Midwestern State takes on St. Mary's (Texas) in a non-conference tilt on Monday, December 16 at Bill Grehey Arena in San Antonio. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
How It Happened
Midwestern State scored 23 consecutive points in the first half, but allowed UT Tyler to draw even on Jadin Penigar's driving layup with 7:57 to go to knot the game at 44-44.
The Mustangs pushed the lead back out to 10 points before UT Tyler made final push. Dontrelle Hewlett finished of a mini 6-0 run for the Patriots with a pair of free throws to pull UTT to within 56-52.
On its next possession, Sam Phipps wasn't able to put away a follow dunk for the Patriots, which would have narrowed the MSU advantage to two points.
Noah McDavid followed with a 3-pointer from the right wing, and the Mustangs made 3-of-4 free throws to put away the win.
Midwestern State hit five 3-pointers including two by Will Shepherd and one each by Pierre Sanders, Mason Gibson, and Vojin Mastilovic on the way to scoring 23 consecutive points during a nine-minute stretch in the first half to bolt out to a 19-point lead.
