Midwestern State hosts Adams State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State faces two more RMAC opponents, but this week the Mustangs are home at D.L. Ligon Coliseum to face Western Colorado and Adams State. The Mountaineers face Midwestern State at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night. The Grizzlies roar into the coliseum on Saturday night for an 8 p.m. tipoff.

Midwestern State opened the season with a split on the road. The Mustangs traveled to snowy Colorado last week and won their season opener at UC Colorado Springs, 72-63. MSU visited Colorado State-Pueblo two days later, and the Thunderwolves defeated the Mustangs, 80-60.

Mason Gibson is the leading scorer for Midwestern State with 17 points per game, and he scored 23 points on 7-of-15 shooting in the loss at CSU-Pueblo. The junior from Allen, Texas, is also leading the team with seven assists.

Will Shepherd opened the season with a 16-point, eight-rebound performance at UCCS and is averaging 10 points and 5.5 rebounds through the first two games.

Newcomer Noah McDavid hit 5-of-9 shots at UCCS en route to 12 points, and he is 3-of-4 from beyond the arc to start the season, averaging nine points per game.

Midwestern State is meeting Western Colorado for the fourth time. The Mustangs have never lost to the Mountaineers, including a 123-121 double-overtime victory in Gunnison seven years ago. This is the first time Western Colorado has visited Midwestern State.

Western Colorado lost its season opener at Oklahoma Christian on Sunday, 71-63. Trevin Lieck scored 12 points to lead the Mountaineers, who scored 36 points in the paint while going 4-for-21 from 3-point range. Western Colorado was outrebounded, 37-27, and the Eagles shot 46 percent against the Mountaineers.

Midwestern State is 5-0 in the all-time series with Adams State, including two victories at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The schools last met in the Al Kaly Shrine Classic in Pueblo, Colorado, six years ago. The Mustangs pulled out a 75-71 victory as Elijah Lee scored 15 points and hit three 3-pointers in the victory.

Adams State makes its third appearance at D.L. Ligon Coliseum and its first since a 103-88 loss in November of 2016, when Sheldon Hagigal scored 27 points, and the Mustangs overcame an early 15-2 deficit.

The Grizzlies opened the season with an 88-80 win over Western New Mexico and then outdueled UT Permian Basin, 95-88, to start the campaign with a pair of wins over LSC opponents in Alamosa, Colorado.

Jude Tapia was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring 21 points against Western New Mexico and 28 points against UTPB. Tapia was 6-of-9 from 3-point range in the win over the Falcons.

Midwestern State opens conference play on Nov. 21, when St. Mary's visits the Mustangs. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
