WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 12-ranked Midwestern State looks to rebound from its 5-0 loss at St. Edward's on Wednesday as it hosts Texas A&M International on Saturday night. Kickoff at Stang Park is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Mustangs suffered their first loss of the season in the conference opener against the Hilltoppers and enter Saturday's contest with a 5-1-2 overall record.
Arthur Souza scored twice, and St. Edward's had goals from Jethro Vourjolo, Emiliano Abboud, and Shunji Watanabe in a 63-second span just past the half-hour mark of the first half. MSU goalkeeper
Jakob Stone was red carded in the 31st minute before Watanabe scored off a free kick from the penalty arch.
The Mustangs, who played more than 59 minutes with 10 men, committed nine fouls, and six yellow cards were issued in the loss.
Midwestern State returns to the friendly confines of Stang Park, where MSU is 3-0-0 this season and has outscored visiting teams, 6-1. Overall, the Mustangs have a goal differential of plus-4, outscoring opponents, 17-13.
Mere Escobar leads the conference with seven goals and 18 points through eight matches this season.
Escobar has 51 career goals at Midwestern State and is the third all-time leading goal scorer in the history of the program. Only Alvin Alexander and Kris Henderson have scored more goals wearing the Maroon & Gold. Alexander netted 58 goals from 1975-1978, and Henderson scored 58 goals from 1987-1990.
Liam Pritchard leads the conference with five assists and has an assist on three of the goals scored by Escobar this year.
Samuele Muroni has three goals, including the game-winner against Fort Hays, and
Eduardo Cerna has scored twice for the Mustangs.
Redshirt freshman
Skyler Krchnak has two assists, and both came in victories at Stang Park.
Stone will not make a seventh start in goal for MSU after receiving the red card at St. Edward's, but the senior has a 5-1-0 record with a goals-against average of 1.50.
Daniel Robles made his third appearance in goal for the Mustangs on Wednesday and is 0-0-2 with a .545 save percentage and a goals-against average of 1.88.
Midwestern State is 19-1-4 in the all-time series with Texas A&M International, and the only loss in the series came at Stang Park two years ago. The Dustdevils won their last visit, 1-0, as Robin Verhoeven made five saves, and Tajani Fairclough scored in the 77th minute.
Last season in Laredo, Midwestern State fell behind 2-0 a little more than five minutes into the game but rallied for a 6-3 victory. Muroni completed a hat trick with a bicycle kick in the final second of the match at Dustdevil Soccer Field.
Texas A&M International is 2-3-2 overall and opened its LSC campaign with a 0-0 draw against West Texas A&M on Wednesday. The Dustdevils are 1-2-0 on the road this season.
TAMIU has scored nine goals and conceded nine goals this season and 28 of their 76 shots have been on goal. Opponents have put 48 of 91 shots on goal against the Dustdevils.
Byron Aguilar and
Dereck Espinal have each scored twice for TAMIU, and Yahir Gallardo has two assists.
Three goalkeepers have a combined 1.29 goals against average and a save percentage of .813. The Dustdevils have four shutouts this season. Nicklas Berg-ericksen and Ioannis Koupepides each have two clean sheets for TAMIU.
Midwestern State is back on the road to face UT Tyler on Wednesday. Kickoff at Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex is scheduled for 5 p.m.
