Stangs look to get back on track against Oklahoma Christian

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State looks to rebound from its first loss in conference play this season as it hosts Oklahoma Christian on Wednesday night. Kickoff at Stang Park is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Midwestern State had a six-game unbeaten streak snapped on Saturday when it suffered a 1-0 loss at St. Edward's. Alyssa Garcia scored the only goal of the game in the 80th minute, and the Mustangs fell to 7-2-3 overall with a 3-1-3 record in the Lone Star Conference.

Midwestern State goalkeeper Allison Dellis made eight saves in the loss at Lewis-Chen Family Stadium, and Daria Schlumbohm made eight saves for the Hilltoppers to come away with a clean sheet.

The Mustangs have conceded at least one goal in all but one match this season, but MSU was shut out for only the second time this year. Missouri Southern also defeated the Mustangs, 1-0, in Joplin, Missouri, on Sept. 20.

Midwestern State still has a plus-14 goal differential this season, outscoring opponents, 27-13, and in the second half of matches, MSU has outscored its opponents, 19-7.

Dellis has a 1.09 goals-against average and has made 64 saves with a save percentage of .842 through 11 matches for the Mustangs.

Cassidy Savoy and Madison Brinkley are tied for the team lead with six goals apiece, which is fourth-most among LSC goal scorers this season.

Allessandra Romano, who suffered a season-ending injury on Oct. 2 in a 2-2 draw at Texas Woman's, has missed the last four games and still leads the LSC with five assists this season.

Lexi Beck has four assists for the Stangs, and Nyxalee Munoz has assisted on three tallies. Savoy has two assists and leads the team in total points with 14.

Munoz has scored three goals for the Mustangs. Beck, Sarah Hayes, Jimena Rodriguez and Lillia Besedin have all scored twice for MSU this season.

The Mustangs are 4-0-2 at home with draws in each of their last two matches at Stang Park. MSU played a 2-2 draw with Angelo State on Oct. 5 and finished in a 1-1 tie with St. Mary's the following week.

Midwestern State has outscored visiting opponents this season, 15-7.

The Mustangs lead the all-time series with the Eagles, 7-2-3, but have not earned a victory in the series since a 3-1 triumph in 2019. Oklahoma Christian won its last visit to Stang Park, 1-0, despite being outshot, 15-7, in 2022.

Savoy scored in the seventh minute of the match last year, and Midwestern State played a 1-1 draw at Oklahoma Christian.

Oklahoma Christian boasts an 8-2-3 overall record, and a 4-2-2 mark in conference play. The Eagles sit third in the LSC standings and lead fifth-place Midwestern State by two points.

Caid Jefferson scored in the 58th minute as OC defeated UT Tyler on Saturday, 1-0. Jefferson also scored in the Eagles 2-0 win over Lubbock Christian. The first two goals of Jefferson's career came in back-to-back games. Oklahoma Christian won at UT Tyler for the first time since 2009 and earned its first-ever win over Lubbock Christian in 16 meetings.

Senior forward Kyla Lovelace leads the LSC with 10 goals this season and has posted three two-goal games this year, most recently in a 4-0 win over Sul Ross State. She also scored twice in a 3-3 draw with Dallas Baptist, and in a 6-2 victory at East Central. The Mustang, Oklahoma, product has 28 career goals but has not scored in three previous appearances against Midwestern State.

There are 11 different Eagles that have recorded an assist this season, but only Keeley Bennett has two assists for OC.

Sophomore goalkeeper Breanna Wooten, who made three saves in a 1-1 draw with MSU last year, has allowed 12 goals and made 49 saves in 11 appearances this season. Wooten has a 1.11 goals-against average and a save percentage of .803. The Wylie, Texas, native has four clean sheets and a record of 6-2-3.

Midwestern State makes the trek to Laredo, Texas, this weekend for a Saturday night match against Texas A&M International. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Dustdevil Soccer Field.
