WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Angelo State scored 27 points in the second quarter and Rams rolled to their fifth consecutive win by beating Midwestern State 44-7 on Homecoming Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
It was MSU's worst home loss since falling to No. 9-ranked Northwest Missouri State in the 1997 season opener.
The Mustangs fell 3-4 on the season and to 2-3 in the Lone Star Conference, while Angelo State improved to 5-2 and moved into a tie with Western Oregon atop the league standings at 5-0.
Angelo State used a 53-yard interception return by Xavier Walton to jump in front of the Mustangs early in the first quarter and led 7-0 on quarterback Braden Fuller's 1-yard run less than two minutes into the game.
The Rams struck for four touchdowns in the second quarter, including a 4-yard run by Cameron Dischler, a 4-yard run by Brayden Wilcon, and a 20-yard end around by Zeek Freeman before Fuller connected with with Hunter Wallis on 20-yard TD pass to give Angelo State 34-0 lead at the half.
ASU extended the advantage to 44-0 in the third quarter with Bradley Larson connecting on a 37-yard field goal at the 12:04 mark before reserve quarterback Kayden Smith found Anthony Jones behind the defense for a 69-yard score with 48 seconds left in the quarter.
Midwestern State broke up the shutout with an 11-yard pass from
Matthew Duncan to
Jimmy Trilla with 2:11 left to play.
Senior safety
Larry Donnell led the MSU defense with six tackles, while
Jayden Plater and
Aaron Jaimes-Rodriguez recorded interceptions for the Mustangs.
Midwestern State travels to the Great Northwest to to face Central Washington Saturday night in Ellensburg. Kickoff at Tomlinson Stadium is set for 8 p.m. (Central Time).
