ELLENSBURG, Washington -- Central Washington churned out 257 rushing yards and Tanner Volk intercepted three passes to lead the 20th-ranked Wildcats to a 42-21 win over Midwestern State on Homecoming Saturday night at Tomlinson Stadium.
Junior running back Tyler Flanagan ran for 111 yards on 15 carries for his third 100-yard performance of the season, while sophomore signal caller Kennedy McGill rushed for 96 yards. Both scored two touchdowns on the ground.
Meanwhile, Volk turned back the clock by intercepting three passes including two off of MSU starting quarterback
Andrew Knebel and another on a pass from
Diego Gonzalez on a fake punt.
Volk led ever level of the NCAA by making 13 interceptions last season on the way to winning the Cliff Harris Award as NCAA Division II's top defensive player.
Reserve quarterback
Matthew Duncan provided a spark for the Mustangs by hitting
Jailyn Robertson for a 12-yard touchdown in the back of the end zone to level the score at 7-7 early in the second quarter.
Duncan pulled the Mustangs back into the game on the first play from scrimmage of the second half, hitting
Adam Johnson on a slant route for a 77-yard touchdown to pull MSU to within 21-14 just under a minute into the third quarter.
Duncan tacked on a third touchdown in the closing minute of the game, hitting
Demonte Greene for a 20-yard score in the back corner of the end zone.
Duncan finished the game with 159 yards on 8-of-13 passing, while also rushing for 36 yards on eight carries.
Johnson, a Bremerton, Washington, native, led the Mustangs with 90 yards on two receptions including the 77-yard touchdown.
Junior
Christian Olige headline the MSU ground attack with 43 yards on nine totes.
Senior linebacker
Braden Robinson led the defense with nine tackles.
Midwestern State (3-5, 2-3 LSC) plays hot to Western Oregon Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Central Washington improved to 6-2 on the season, while moving to 5-1 in LSC play.
