WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State picked off Sul Ross State starting quarterback Andrew Martinez three times, returning two for touchdowns in a 40-21 win Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
Larry Donnell returned an interception for 98 yards for a touchdown to give the Mustangs a 20-0 lead in the second quarter, then
Karter Houchin returned another oskie for a 29-yard score in the third quarter to extend the MSU advantage to 37-7.
Donnell's interception return was the fourth longest in program history and the longest since Neiko Conway went 99 yards against Tarleton State in 2010. Donnell picked off another pass late at the end of the first half, while also making three tackles.
Sophomore
Andrew Knebel connected on 16-of-25 passes for 190 yards in his second start of the season including a 28-yard strike to
Jimmy Trilla in the first quarter and threw a 27-yard TD to
Demonte Greene in the second quarter.
Knebel also scored on an 8-yard run in the first quarter, while
Joseph Carlson connected on field goals from 27 and 48 yards.
Junior
Devin Cross led the Mustangs' ground attack with 60 yards on 11 carries, while
Jalen March rushed for 55 yards on 13 totes.
Seniors Sergio Medina, Jr. and
Braden Robinson made four tackles each to lead the MSU defense. The Mustangs also enjoyed their best day of the season in terms of creating pressure on the quarterback.
MSU finished with campaign-high four sacks, including on each by
Quincy Montgomery,
Titus Howard, Jr., and
Korbin Johnson, while
Mekhi Prospere and
Hornel Cloubou split another.
Midwestern State takes on Angelo State for Homecoming 2024 Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
