THE LEAD
WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Pierre Sanders scored 29 of his game-high 31 points after halftime to lead Midwestern State to an 88-79 win over No. 19-ranked Angelo State in double overtime Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
It was the third win in the last four games for the Mustangs, who improved to 11-5 on the season, while leveling their Lone Star Conference ledger at 5-5.
Angelo State suffered its third straight defeat to fall to 12-4 and 7-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sanders spurred Midwestern State back from seven points down by scoring 13 points in the final eight minutes of regulation to force overtime at 63-all.
Then, junior
Will Shepherd forced a second overtime by connecting on a 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining, again tying the game at 72-72.
Sanders ignited a 12-2 run from the start of the second overtime period by netting seven points during the sequence which was capped by another Shepherd 3-pointer to give the Mustangs a commanding 84-74 advantage with 2:01 to play.
Amaechi Chukwu and Sanders converted a pair of free throws each in the final 30 seconds to seal the win for the Mustangs.
LEADERS
- MSU senior
Pierre Sanders splashed in a campaign-high 31 points on 11-of-19 shooting with two 3-pointers while also connecting on 7-of-9 free throws. He also dished out eight assists and grabbed seven rebounds.
- It was Sanders' second career 30-point performance and second highest scoring output. Sanders poured in 36 points in a 92-86 win over West Texas A&M on January 26, 2023.
- Junior forward
Will Shepherd polished off his first double-double for the Maroon & Gold, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
- Shepherd drilled three triples and has hit multiple 3s in 11 games this season.
- Junior forward
Reggie Hill also completed his first double-double of the campaign, finishing with 14 points and 13 rebounds. He was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field including a season-high three 3-pointers.
- Redshirt-sophomore
Amaechi Chukwu contributed eight points and grabbed two rebounds, but the Mustangs outscored Angelo State by 23 points in his 35 minutes of floor time.
- Angelo State senior Kevon Godwin netted a team-high 20 points on 9-of-20 shooting to lead the Rams. It was his eighth game this season scoring at least 20 points.
TEAM NOTES
- Midwestern State improved to 3-0 in overtime games this season. The Mustangs claimed an 80-74 win in two OTs in the season opener against Colorado State-Pueblo, then beat St. Mary's 108-104 on November 18. Both games were played at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
- The Mustangs have now won their last four overtime games as a program, also beating West Texas A&M -- 100-90 -- on January 27, 2022.
- Midwestern State snapped a string of five consecutive losses against teams ranked in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Top 25 with an 88-79 win over No. 19 Angelo State. The Mustangs last beat No. 12 West Texas A&M -- 100-90 in OT -- on January 27, 2022.
- The Mustangs snapped a three -game losing streak at the hands of Angelo State, beating the Rams for the first time since February 20, 2021. Midwestern State owns a 50-36 all-time lead over Angelo State and is 32-9 against the Rams all-time at Ligon Coliseum.
- Midwestern State won the rebounding battle for the fourth consecutive game, controlling the glass with a 51-39 edge against ASU.
