GUNNISON, Colo. -- Midwestern State played Fort Lewis in its first of two matches at Katy O. Rady Field on the campus of Western Colorado. The Mustangs suffered their first loss of the season on Friday afternoon, and the Skyhawks remained unbeaten with a 3-0 victory.
After earning draws in each of its first two matches, Midwestern State (0-1-2) fell behind in the 32nd minute as Anika Scherer, assisted by Elizabeth David, scored her first goal of the season for Fort Lewis (2-0-1).
Senior goalkeeper
Lexi Jackson made three saves in the first half, and the score remained 1-0 until the 85th minute.
Aubrey Swindle stepped in front of
Allessandra Romano to intercept a pass from
Marissa Resendez along the right touchline and made an exciting 60-yard run before sliding the ball to her left, where Rylee Rustad made a run down the center-forward channel and blasted a 10-yard shot beyond a diving Jackson and inside the left post. Rustad scored her first goal of the year and put the Mustangs in a desperate situation.
With the Mustangs' back line pushed forward in the 89th minute,
Maya Warrior deflected the ball away from Swindle at midfield but right into the path of Sabrina Reyes, who moved down the inside right channel and hit the back of the net from 15 yards out to secure a 3-0 victory for the Skyhawks.
Jackson finished the game with six saves for MSU.
Fort Lewis goalkeeper Riley Bravin made two saves in the first half for the Skyhawks, denying
Lexi Beck and
McKenna Jenkins. In the second half, goalkeeper Katlyn Rosenbaum stopped shots from
Isabella Cruz,
Lillia Besedin and Resendez to preserve the shutout.
Midwestern State faces Western Colorado on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
