MESCALERO, New Mexico -- Midwestern State struggled to an eighth-place showing in the season lid lifter in the RJGA South Central Shootout Tuesday at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Golf Course.
The Mustangs stumbled to the field's highest round with a 23-over team total of 311 to finish the 54-hole tournament at 29 over.
"This was a pretty humbling experience," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "It has been a long time since we had a tournament like this. We'll have to turn it around and find five guys who can get a quality score. We have a long way to go to catch some of the conference schools we saw this week."
West Texas A&M claimed top team honors logging team totals of 285, 285, and 283 for an 11-under total of 853 to win by six strokes over Colorado Christian (859 / -5).
The Cougars were trailed by Colorado State-Pueblo (861/-3), UT Permian Basin (864/E), Colorado Mesa (865/+1), and Western New Mexico (866/+2). There was a 20-stroke drop off between WNMU at sixth to the bottom five teams in the field.
UT Permian Basin senior Sangha Park claimed individual medalist honors, firing scores of 70, 69, and 67 for a 10-under 206 to win by four strokes over the trio of Western New Mexico's Adam Niles, West Texas A&M's Victor Estas, and Colorado Chrisitan's Adam Duncan.
Junior
Gatlin Goad led the Mustangs, finishing in a tie for 20th after sandwiching scores of 73 and 79 around a team-low round of 67 in the second round. The Wheeler, Texas, native logged a 3-over, 54-hole total of 219.
Senior
Keaton Dickens carded three consecutive 77s to tie for 30th with a 6-over total of 222, while fellow senior
Ethan Dean started hot with an opening round 68 before falling off to scores of 75 and 81 to place 42nd with an 8-over 224.
Senior
Kevin Yang tied for 52nd with a 15-over 231, while redshirt-freshman
Hank Germany tied for 58th with an 18-over 234.
"No one played good golf today and no one could get it going," Ray said. "You have these kind of days in golf."
Midwestern State will look to get back on track next week in the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational played at the Amarillo Country Club on Oct. 2-3.
