Missouri Western and William Jewell score wins over Midwestern State in Washburn Invitational

TOPEKA, Kansas -- Midwestern State (2-6) fell to Missouri Western (6-2) and William Jewell (4-4) in its final two matches at the Washburn Invitational on Saturday.
 

William Jewell 3, Midwestern State 0

Freshman standout Isabella Dickens hit .636 with seven kills on 11 swings without an attack error for Midwestern State, but the Cardinals prevailed in straight sets.

The first set featured 16 ties and six lead changes, but with the set tied 19-19, William Jewell got four consecutive kills from Bella LaPorta, Maliyah Johnson, Alex Dvorak and Anna Godfredsen to take a 23-19 lead. The Mustangs closed to within two points but a Godfredsen kill following a timeout by the Cardinals closed out the opening frame.

William Jewell established an early 10-4 lead in the second set. Alexis Nunn won three straight points from the service line, including an ace, as the Cardinals extended their lead to 19-10. William Jewell closed the set on a 6-1 run to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-13 victory.

The third set was tied, 13-13, after Riley Rabedeaux had two kills in a four-point run for the Mustangs, but the Cardinals won the next five points, and William Jewell prevailed, 25-19.

The Cardinals hit .324 with LaPorta and Dvorak each finishing with 11 kills for William Jewell. The Mustangs hit .190 over three sets. Alayna Guerrero had 29 assists and 11 digs to lead Midwestern State.
 

Missouri Western 3, Midwestern State 0

Lauryn Bourne had eight kills on 27 swings and finished with 12 digs, but Midwestern State lost its opening match of the day to Missouri Western, 3-0, at Lee Arena.

The first set featured nine ties and six lead changes. A Lily Kurz kill gave the Griffons a 21-19 lead and began a four-point run for Missouri Western, which won the opener, 25-20.

Missouri Western hit .333 in the second set, led by Taylor Russell, who had five kills on 10 swings without an error in the second set. There were 12 ties and five lead changes in the frame, but the Griffons won five of the final seven points in a 25-16 victory to take a 2-0 lead.

MSU hit .105 in the second set, and the struggles continued in the third set. The Mustangs hit .053, and Alayna Guerrero was the only player with multiple kills in the set for Midwestern State, which suffered a 25-16 setback.

Midwestern State will play four matches in Portales, New Mexico, as part of the LSC Crossover event. The first match at Greyhound Arena is Thursday at 5 p.m. as the Mustangs tangle with Cameron. MSU faces Western New Mexico at 5 p.m. on Friday and meets St. Edward's and Eastern New Mexico in matches at noon and 4 p.m. on Saturday.
