ARLINGTON, Texas -- Midwestern State is seeking a fourth-straight dual-match victory and a 10th consecutive win over Dallas Baptist as the Mustangs travel to Arlington Tennis Center for a Lone Star Conference clash on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for noon.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series, 11-1, and the Mustangs have not lost to the Patriots since dropping a 5-4 decision at home in 2012. MSU is 6-0 as the visiting team against Dallas Baptist and defeated the Patriots last year, 7-0.
Emilija Visic is one of four singles players that has won three consecutive matches for the Mustangs.
Amelia Lawson,
Skylar Minns and
Micaela McSpadden have also won their last three matches.
Lawson is 10-8 and has played exclusively in the No. 1 position for MSU. Lawson is coming off a laborious 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 victory over Teodora Vrucan of UT Permian Basin.
Lawson and
Sydney Williams have become a venerable pairing in doubles. The 31st-ranked duo has won their last eight doubles matches, and they are 12-4 this season.
Visic is returning to the form that saw her finish last with a 19-2 record in singles. The junior from Phoenix has not dropped a set in her last three matches, defeating Brooke Runyan of UT Permian Basin, 6-2, 6-3, in her last outing. Visic posted a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Elise Carbo of Dallas Baptist at No. 5 singles last year.
Visic and Minns have been a composed doubles team, boasting a 10-1 record for the Mustangs. The only loss came in a tiebreak at Angelo State. Since the defeat, the duo has only dropped four of 22 games and has been first off in each of the last two duals.
Minns is 11-1 after opening the campaign with an eight-match winning streak. The junior from New Braunfels, Texas, split a pair of tiebreaks with Lisa Guitton of UT Permian Basin before winning a super tiebreak at No. 5 singles on Saturday, 10-6. Minns defeated Ira Vogelman of Dallas Baptist last season at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-0.
Micaela McSpadden continues to impress for Midwestern State. The sophomore transfer from Emporia State has won seven of her last eight completed matches, and she is 7-3 in singles for the Mustangs. McSpadden breezed past Tuva Asplund of UT Permiam Basin, 6-2, 6-1. Six of her seven singles wins have come in straight sets.
Alice Di Matteo has made 14 appearances at No. 3 singles for Midwestern State and is 7-8 overall in singles.
Di Matteo and
Kanaha Furutani are 4-2 against conference opponents in doubles this year, and they have a 10-8 record in doubles overall. Di Matteo and Furutani posted 6-1 victories over St. Mary's, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Lubbock Christian. The duo enjoyed a 6-4 victory over Western New Mexico in the recent homestand for Midwestern State.
Dallas Baptist is coming off a narrow 4-3 loss to Lubbock Christian on Friday. The Patriots won all three doubles matches, including a 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles. The Patriots also earned wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles for the Patriots.
Dallas Baptist has lost five of its last six duals. The only victory in that span was a 4-0 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Patriots are 15-7 overall with a 3-4 record against LSC opponents. Dallas Baptist is 8-4 at home this year.
Entering the week Dallas Baptist had a winning record at five of the six singles positions. The Patriots are 7-12 at No. 2 singles. Four different players have played No. 1 singles, and the team was 15-4. Leonie Schondelmaier is 7-2 at No. 3 singles, and the Patriots are 13-4 as a team. Six different players have led Dallas Baptist to an 11-7 mark in the No. 4 position. The Patriots are 11-5 at No. 5 singles, and Sofia Teran has led the team to a 12-1 record at No. 6 singles.
Teran has won seven consecutive singles matches for the Patriots. Elise Carbo has reeled off four-straight wins in singles, and Schondelmaier has also posted four consecutive wins in singles. The Patriots have been strong at doubles this season with a 43-14 record overall. No. 1 doubles is 16-3. No. 2 doubles is 15-5, and the No. 3 position is 12-6.
Midwestern State travels to UT Tyler on Tuesday and the first serve at Summers Tennis Center is scheduled for 11 a.m.
