Mustangs hit the road for LSC dual with Javelinas

KINGSVILLE, Texas -- No. 33-ranked Midwestern State (10-4) begins a stretch of nine consecutive dual-matches against Lone Star Conference opponents as it visits Texas A&M-Kingsville (6-6) on Friday. First serve on the Javelina Tennis Courts is scheduled for noon.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with Texas A&M-Kingsville, 13-2. The Mustangs had a five-dual winning streak in the series snapped with a 4-3 loss to TAMUK in the LSC quarterfinals last spring. The Javelinas won four tiebreak sets in the victory.

Midwestern State is 1-0 in the LSC after a 5-2 win over St. Mary's last month. The Mustangs are 2-2 as the visiting team this season.

Skylar Minns is 7-0 in singles for MSU with four victories coming in the No. 5 position, including a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Alessia Terlizzi of St. Mary's in the conference opener on Feb. 25.

Emilija Visic is 7-5 in singles matches for the Mustangs, playing 11 matches in the No. 4 position and winning her only match at No. 3 singles. Visic defeated Gabriella Ioannou of St. Mary's, 6-4, 6-2, in her first conference clash of the campaign.

Sydney Williams has won five of her eight singles matches this season. The sophomore from Austin, Texas, has played both No. 5 and No. 6 singles for the Mustangs this year. Williams had a five-match winning streak, which included a 6-2, 6-4 win over Stela Sifuentes of St. Mary's.

Amelia Lawson is 7-6 and has won three of her last five completed matches for the Mustangs in the No. 1 position.

Alice Di Matteo scored a 2-6, 7-6 (8), 6-3 victory over Kyndall Quiroz of St. Mary's in her first conference singles match of the season and is 6-5 in singles overall for the Mustangs.

Minns and Visic are 6-0 as a doubles team after posting a 6-4 victory over Lucia Casas Blas and Ariella Curci of Missouri Western.

Visic improved to 7-1 in doubles overall, and Minns is 9-3 in doubles.

Williams and Lawson, ranked No. 38 in the nation as a doubles pairing, are 7-4 at No. 1 doubles and have won their last three matches, including a 6-2 win over Anya Chavez and Cristina Granero Boj of Missouri Western.

Di Matteo and Kanaha Furutani are 7-6 as a doubles team and defeated Angela Vargas and Bailey Goodwin of St. Mary's in the No. 2 position, 6-1, for their first LSC victory of the year.

Midwestern State is 24-14 overall in doubles this season.

Texas A&M-Kingsville is 2-2 in LSC dual-matches this season but lost its only previous dual at home, falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 7-0, on Jan. 30.

The Javelinas won their last conference dual at Arkansas-Fort Smith, 6-1, and are coming off a 7-0 win over New Paltz.

Annika Andersson Gomez has a four-match winning streak at No. 5 singles for TAMUK, including a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Sofia Tominga of UAFS. Andersson Gomez improved to 3-1 in conference matches and is 7-3 in singles overall.

Alessa Maier is 6-4 at No. 1 singles for TAMUK and has won three of her last four singles matches, but she was pushed to a third-set tiebreak before defeating Joanna Potet of UAFS in her last LSC match.

Milou Ter Morsche is 1-3 against conference opponents this season, but the junior from Goor, Netherlands, defeated Isabella Serrano of UAFS, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 4 position. Ter Morsche is coming off a 6-4, 6-4 win over Nuria Martin Lopez of Slippery Rock on March 14.

Manuela Turolo is 2-2 in her last four matches at the No. 3 spot in singles for the Javelinas.

Raina Zaffar, a junior from Guwahati, India, has played No. 2 singles in the last four duals for TAMUK, and she is 2-2 in those matches. Zaffar is also 2-2 against LSC foes this season, scoring wins against UAFS and UT Permian Basin.

Maier and Ter Morsche are 6-4 as a doubles team and have played the No. 1 position in the last two dual-matches for the Javelinas.

Sterre Fleur Moerdijk and Andersson Gomez are 3-7 at No. 3 doubles this season, and the duo has lost three matches against LSC opponents this season.

TAMUK is 19-14 overall in doubles matches this season.

Midwestern State continues its road trip with a stop in San Angelo to face the No-19 ranked Angelo State Rambelles at noon on Saturday.
