LA MIRANDA, Calif. -- No. 15 Midwestern State (8-7) and Biola (7-4) squared off in a lengthy dual as the Mustangs wrapped up their California road trip with a 4-3 loss to the Eagles at Biola Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
The dual was decided by the outcome of the No. 5 singles match.
Juan David Duque leveled the match at a set apiece with a 6-3 victory in the second set after Biola's Isaac Cordova won the opening set, 7-5. Cordova won the first two games and jumped out to a 4-1 lead before clinching the dual with a 6-2 triumph in the final set.
The Mustangs went 1-3 in their Spring Break jaunt to California.
Midwestern State opened its final dual of the road trip by capturing the doubles point.
Germano Setti and
Marcal Miret Avante conquered Sebastian Herrera and Callen Hein in the No. 2 position, 6-3.
Juan David Duque and
Luis Diaz Argente followed up with a 6-4 win over Alexey Prokopchuk and Alex Sedeno at No. 3 doubles.
Prokopchuk pulled the Eagles even with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Diaz in the No. 1 singles position. Diaz suffered his second loss on the California trip and fell to 6-8 in singles this season. The senior from Spain is 3-6 at No. 1 singles.
Antonio Rosales Varona put Biola in front with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over
Germano Setti in the No. 4 position. It was just the fourth loss over 15 duals in the No. 4 spot for MSU this season. Setti is 7-4 in the fourth slot, and his record is 9-6 in singles overall.
Adrian Solorzano of Biola outlasted
Charles Heffernan in the No. 3 singles match, 2-6, 7-6, 6-1. Heffernan played in the No. 3 spot for the first time this season and his singles record fell to 5-8.
Stephen Slocombe needed less than an hour to dispatch Hein in the No. 6 singles match, 6-1, 6-4, and
Marcal Miret Avante won a dramatic three-set match over Sebastian Herrera, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4), as Midwestern State tied the dual, 3-3.
Miret played No. 2 singles for the first time and improved his singles record to 9-5. Slocombe improved to 3-0 in singles this season and won all four singles sets in his two appearances on the road trip.
The Mustangs return to the courts on March 28 to face conference rival Lubbock Christian at the Penny Gullo Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for noon.
