LA MIRADA, Calif. -- No. 10-ranked Midwestern State will play its second of four duals in California against Hawaii-Hilo at the Biola Tennis Center on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Midwestern State is facing the Vulcans for the fifth time and the all-time series is tied, 2-2. In 2018, Hawaii-Hilo defeated the Mustangs 7-2 in Las Vegas. The three previous encounters were all in Glendale, Arizona. MSU posted a 7-2 victory in 2010, which was one year after Hawaii-Hilo pasted the Mustangs, 9-0. In 2008, Midwestern State edged the Vulcans in the first-ever meeting, 5-4.
The Mustangs opened their trip to the Golden State with a 4-0 loss at 33rd-ranked Azusa Pacific on Monday afternoon.
Killian Guillou has opened the campaign with six consecutive victories in singles for the Mustangs, winning five matches at the No. 6 position. He also scored a victory at No. 4 singles, where Midwestern State is 10-2 as a team.
Germano Setti is 6-2 at No. 4 singles and had a five-match winning streak snapped with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Miha Velicki of Azusa Pacific on Monday. Setti is 2-2 at No. 3 singles.
Marcal Miret Avante is 6-4 in singles overall, winning his only match in the No. 5 position and winning twice in the No. 4 spot. Miret is 3-4 at No. 3 singles.
MSU is 6-5 at No. 2 singles this season.
Luis Diaz Argente is 3-2 in the No. 2 position, and
Charles Heffernan fell to 3-3 with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 loss to Leyton Bohren of Azusa Pacific.
Diaz is 2-4 at No. 1 singles and Heffernan is 1-3 in the No. 1 position for the Mustangs.
Juan David Duque is 4-2 in singles for the Mustangs and has won his last two completed matches. He is 3-2 at No. 5 singles and won his only match in the No. 4 position.
Duque and Diaz Argente are 6-4 in doubles for Midwestern State, which is 20-15 in doubles matches this season.
Heffernan had a four-match winning streak in doubles snapped at Azusa Pacific and lost for the first time in four matches with
Killian Guillou as his partner. Heffernan is 4-2 overall in doubles this season, and Guillou is 6-4.
Miret Avante has won three of his last five doubles matches and is 6-5 for the season.
Hawaii-Hilo is 1-3 this season with a 6-1 victory over Holy Names Hawks at Waipahu, Hawaii, on Feb. 11. The Vulcans are coming off a 6-1 loss to Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego on Monday.
Senior Joshua Liu scored the only point for the Vulcans at PLNU Tennis Courts on Monday. Liu outlasted Andrew Suver of Point Loma Nazarene 11-9 in a third-set tiebreak.
Hawaii-Hilo won the PacWest title in 2021 and reached the NCAA semifinals in 2019 and 2021. Junior Luca Matheiowetz was 12-4 in singles last season and has won his last two matches for the Vulcans this season.
Kallen Mizuguchi is the head coach at Hawaii-Hilo and led the men to a third-place finish in the PacWest Championships last season. The Vulcans advanced to the NCAA West Regional, where they lost to fourth-ranked Hawaii Pacific.
The Mustangs face Fresno Pacific at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex in Azusa on Thursday. First serve is scheduled for noon central time.
