Mustangs open 2023 campaign with three matches in Kearney

KEARNEY, Neb. -- Midwestern State opens its 2023 campaign with three matches Friday and Saturday at the newly opened Ernest Grundy Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS | Midwestern State returns three letter winners off of last season's 17-9 squad which advanced to NCAA Division II postseason play for the ninth consecutive season. Sophomore Marcal Miret Avante garnered honorable mention All-Lone Star Conference, while senior Charles Heffernan posted a 16-7 singles record and Stephen Slocombe was a part of 11 doubles victories. Senior Luis Diaz Argente transfers to MSU following a stellar career at St. Edward's. The Mustangs also welcome in a quartet of freshmen including Juan David  Duque, Killian Gillou, Philip Kamara, and Germano Setti.

THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS


NEWMAN | Friday, Feb. 3 | 7 p.m.
- Newman is coming off of a 10-12 showing in 2022 including a 2-5 mark in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.
- The Jets are under the direction of 19th-year coach Shella Augspurger.
- Midwestern State and Newman meet for the fifth time on the courts. The Mustangs have won the previous four meetings.

MSU DENVER | Saturday, Feb. 4 | 8 a.m.
- MSU Denver posted a 2-1 record during the fall duels season after posting a 14-5 record in 2022.
- The Roadrunners are under the direction of fifth-year coach Josh Graetz.
- Junior Jeanloup Auzias is 10-6 playing at No. 1 singles since the start of the 2022 campaign, while junior Juho Kantola and sophomore Alejandro Jimenez are 3-0 playing at No. 2 and No. 3 singles through the first three duels matches this season.
- Midwestern State and MSU Denver meet for the 15th time on the courts. The Mustangs have won all 14 of the previous meetings.

AUGUSTANA | Saturday, Feb. 4 | 1 p.m.
- Augustana posted a 7-9 record and were 0-4 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association play last season.
- The Vikings are under the direction of 19th-year coach Marc Kurtz, who holds a 94-157 record in men's play.
- Sophomore Henry Dornsbusch boasted a 9-4 record at No. 1 singles last season.
- Midwestern State and Augustana meet for the first time on the courts Saturday in Kearney.

UP NEXT

Midwestern State hits the road for a non-conference doubleheader against East Central (Okla.) Tuesday afternoon in Ada. First pitches are set for 1 and 3 p.m.
