TYLER, Texas -- Midwestern State plays the first of three matches this weekend Friday afternoon against Tyler Junior College. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Joann Medlock Murphy Tennis Center.
The Mustangs close the weekend by playing Cowley College (Kan.) and Collin College (Texas) Saturday at the MSU Tennis Center.
ABOUT THE MUSTANGS | Midwestern State received votes in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II preseason rankings. The Mustangs improved to 4-1 with a sweep of Southeastern Oklahoma State Saturday in Wichita Falls. MSU opened the season with wins over Newman (Kan.), MSU Denver (Colo.), and Augustana (S.D.) in Kearney, Nebraska. Midwestern's lone loss came against No. 15 Northwest Missouri State on Feb. 10 in Edmond, Oklahoma.
ITA SOUTH CENTRAL REGION RANKINGS | The Mustangs boast four student-athletes in the November release of the South Central Region. Senior
Charles Heffernan is ranked seventh, followed by
Juan David Duque at No. 8,
Marcal Miret Avante at No. 13, and
Germano Setti at No. 18.
FOUR IN A ROW | Sophomore
Marcal Miret Avante opened the season with four consecutive wins claiming one at No. 3, two at No. 4, and one at No. 5. His most impressive win has come at No. 1 doubles with partner
Germano Setti. The duo knocked off No. 10-ranked Mason Meier and Jan Skerbatis of Northwest Missouri State, 6-1. Miret Avante and Setti are 3-2 at the top doubles position.
UNBEATEN FROSH | Killian Guillou remains perfect at 3-0 with three straight-set wins to open his collegiate career. The Paris, France, native claimed his first two victories at No. 6 before moving up to No. 4 to beat Augustana's Meg Siritaworachan -- 6-0, 7-6 (5) -- at No. 4. He led Southeastern Oklahoma's Diego Orduz -- 3-1 in the first set -- before the match was abandoned.
SCOUTING THE APACHES | Tyler Junior College is ranked No. 3 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association junior college rankings. The Apaches boast eight players in the ITA national junior college rankings including Diego Dalisay at No. 2, Emilio Vila at No. 5, Tim Riedel at No. 10, Mikaeel Woodman at No. 11, Faiz Nasyam at No. 15, Natithaolin Golmei at No. 18, Dan Persson at No. 19, and Peter Blair at No. 40. TJC has four ranked doubles teams including Golmei and Persson at No. 3, Naysam and Vila at No. 4, Riedel and Dalisay at No. 9, and Woodman and Blair at No. 18.
