WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State swept past Southeastern Oklahoma State 5-0 in its home opener Saturday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
The Mustangs leveled their season record at 2-2, while the Savage Storm dropped to 1-1.
MSU dominated doubles play to take the early lead.
Junior
Skylar Minns teamed with sophomore
Micaela McSpadden to beat SOSU's Vanessa Nitu and Michelle Markovic 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Moments later,
Kanaha Furutani and
Alice Di Matteo rolled to a 6-2 win over Rhythm Aswal and Chiara Matteodo at No. 2 to finish off the Savage Storm in doubles' play.
MSU's
Sydney Williams and
Amelia Lawson commanded a 5-3 lead over Georgia Hosking and Sara Gonzalez at No. 1 doubles before the match was abandoned.
The Mustangs made quick work of Southeastern Oklahoma in singles play -- all in straight sets.
DiMatteo rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Gonzalez at No. 3, while Lawson beat Nitu 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1.
MSU junior
Emilija Visic clinched the team victory by taking down Matteodo -- 6-3, 6-3 -- at No. 4.
Midwestern State sophomore
Micaela McSpadden also won by walkover against Markovic at No. 6.
Midwestern State plays a trio of matches against junior college competition next weekend. The Mustangs travel to face Tyler Junior on Friday before returning home to play Cowley County (Kan.) and Collin College at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.
