No. 2-ranked Mustangs shut out Oklahoma Christian, 3-0, to remain unbeaten

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 2-ranked Midwestern State remained unbeaten this season, and Oklahoma Christian remained winless at Stang Park in the series as the Mustangs posted a 3-0 victory over the Eagles.

Dereck Espinal, Mere Escobar and Josh Milla scored for the Mustangs, who outshot the Eagles, 17-7.

Midwestern State improved to 10-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the Lone Star Conference. Oklahoma Christian is winless in its last 10 matches and is 1-5-5 with a 0-1-1 record in the LSC.

In the 26th minute, Oklahoma Christian goalkeeper Fynn Koerner gambled with a diving effort to stop a shot from Max Gonzales. Espinal struck the loose ball in front of an open net, and the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead.

Midwestern State maintained the one-goal advantage until Mere Escobar scored his LSC leading 11th goal of the season in the 75th minute.

Espinal and Liam Pritchard worked a give and go into the box, and Espinal centered a pass to Escobar just outside the 6-yard box. Escobar buried a left-footed shot past Koerner.

In the 82nd minute, Midwestern State slammed the door on any chances the Eagles might have at a comeback. James Mitchell found Josh Milla with a long ball out of the back. Milla was one-on-one with the goalkeeper, who was well off his line. The junior from McKinney, Texas, tucked a shot underneath a diving Koerner to the lower right corner. The ball scraped off the post and crossed the goal line as MSU took a 3-0 lead.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with Oklahoma Christian, 22-2-1, and is 13-0-1 when hosting the Eagles, who have been outscored in the last three meetings, 8-1.

The Mustangs return to Stang Park on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. clash with UT Tyler.
