ARLINGTON, Texas -- In the Lone Star Conference championship match, Midwestern State took an early drop, falling behind UT Tyler 3-0. The Mustangs rebounded on
Stefan Andrei and
Alex Martinez Roca's singles victories. In the end, the Patriots took home the trophy after clinching the match at line four.
This is UT Tyler's first championship win since joining NCAA Division II.
In doubles play, fourth-ranked Martinez Roca and
Ben Westwick claimed a 6-3 win over 45th-ranked Gonzalo Fernandez and Mortiz Mayer. This is the second time that the Mustang duo overcame the Patriot pair this season. Martinez Roca and Westwick move to a 20-2 record for the year, winning their last three matches.
UTT grabbed the doubles point and wins at lines two and three for the lead.
Andrei posted MSU's first point at line six. The freshman secured a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win over Egor Shestakov. Andrei holds a 10-2 tally at line six with victories in his last two matches.
Martinez Roca tallied his third consecutive win at line one. The 25th-ranked senior collected a 6-4, 6-3 score over No. 32 Fernandez. Martinez Roca is 12-5 for the season. He and
Charles Heffernan were named to the 2022 LSC All-Tournament Team.
Midwestern State awaits its regional fate until Tuesday, May 3. The NCAA Selection Show will announce the brackets for the regional rounds that are May 9-10. The show will start at 7:30 p.m. CT on NCAA.com
