TROPHY CLUB, Texas -- Midwestern State's Juanita Gomez rode a hot start to another solid performance on the opening day of the Texas A&M-Commerce Lion Invitational Monday at Trophy Club's Hogan Course.

The senior from Medellin, Colombia fired three birdies on a four-hole stretch to go 3-under through her first five holes of the opening round.

Gomez fought through tough playing conditions to card scores of 76 and 78 for a 10-over total of 154. She heads into the final round six strokes behind tournament leading Jacqueline Klemm of Arkansas Tech (74-74 148/+4).

Freshman Makenna Henry played steady golf to notch 15 pars in the opening round on the way to marking scores of 75 and 82. The freshman from Sour Lake is tied for 10th with a 13-over total of 157.

"It was a good day. Juanita was solid today under tough conditions," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "Makenna had a great first round and showed some of the potential she has. She is a hard worker and a pretty determined."

The duo led MSU into fifth place on the team leader board with totals of 321 and 316 for a 61-over 637. The Mustangs trail Texas A&M-Commerce (617/+41), Angelo State (621/+45), Southwestern Oklahoma (631/+55) and Arkansas Tech (635/+59).

Junior Beatrice Perucchini carded a team-high three birdies in the second round on the way to a team low, 3-over 75. The Varese, Italy native bounced back from an opening round 86 to tie for 24th with a 17-over total of 161.

Freshmen Brecklyn Flanagan (85-81 166/+22) and Hollie James (85-84 169/+25) tied for 40th and 45th, respectively.

There were three players remaining on the course when play was suspended due to severe weather entering the area Monday afternoon.

The final round is slated to begin following the completion of the second round Tuesday morning.
