Midwestern State looks to continue momentum at Texas A&M-Commerce Lion Invitational

TROPHY CLUB, Texas -- Midwestern State competes in its seventh tournament of the season Monday and Tuesday in the Texas A&M-Commerce Lion Invitational on the Hogan Course at the Trophy Club Country Club.

The 54-hole tournament tees off Monday with two continuous rounds beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

1 |  Midwestern State has won two of its last three tournaments. The Mustangs won the Oklahoma Intercollegiate before closing the fall with a third-place showing at the Nick Turner Invitational at Arroyo Del Oso Golf Course in Albuquerque. MSU opened the spring by claiming top team honors at the Midwestern State Invitational last week. MSU's Juanita Gomez claimed individual titles at the Cameron Intercollegiate and the Midwestern State Invitational, while junior Beatrice Perucchini won the Nick Turner Invitational.

2 |  Midwestern State is 50th in the GolfStat national rankings and were outside of the second release of the NCAA Division II West Super Region Rankings which were issued on March 17.

The Mustangs are one of four teams in the Lion Invitational field currently ranked in the GolfStat Top 50 joining No. 19 Texas A&M-Commerce, No. 30 Arkansas Tech and No. 49 Southwestern Oklahoma.

3 |  Midwestern State competes in the Lion Invitational for the second time with the event hosted at the Trophy Club Country Club. The Mustangs finished tied for 10th in 2021 firing team totals of 326 and 334 for an 84-over 660 on the Whitworth Course. Juanita Gomez was the top individual finisher tying for 25th carding logging scores of 76 and 84 for a 16-over 160.

4 |  Midwestern State boasts two golfers ranked in the top 150 of the GolfStat national rankings. Senior Juanita Gomez ranks 83rd with an adjusted scoring average of 74.61, while junior Beatrice Perucchini (75.81) is 114th. Gomez has three straight top-five finishes including wins at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate and the Midwestern State Invitational. 
Perucchini is coming off of three-straight Top 10 finishes placing sixth at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate before taking her first collegiate win at the Nick Turner Invitational. She opened the spring by tying for fifth at the MSU Invitational.

5 |  MSU's lineup for the Lion Invitational consists of senior Juanita Gomez (74.73 season stroke average), junior Beatrice Perucchini (75.93), freshman Brecklyn Flanagan (78.50), freshman Mekenna Henry (81.15) and freshman Hollie James (82.33).
