No. 45 Mustangs secure first LSC win, go 6-1 over UAFS

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- On their third consecutive victory, No. 45 Midwestern State clinched the Lone Star Conference opener against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Mustangs tallied at 6-1 score over the Lions by sweeping all six singles battles to move to 7-5 on the season and 5-3 at home.

UAFS got the early start with a 6-2 takedown at the third doubles line. Anis Ramchane and Killian Darmeax collected their third straight victory as they overcame Marcal Miret Avante and Stephen Slocombe. The Mustang pair holds a 4-5 record after the drop.

The third-ranked duo of Alex Martinez Roca and Ben Westwick posted a 6-2 score at the first spot. They beat out Wian Van Dyk and Ethan Eddleman to tally a 9-1 record for the 2022 season.

The Lions clinched the doubles point at the second position. Daniel Borrero and Juan Rosello bested Brice Bradshaw and Quentin Scharfenberg by 6-4. Both duos are 3-2 on the year as Bradshaw and Scharfenberg break their streak.

Midwestern State rebounded on the singles side of play. Bradshaw claimed his fourth straight victory with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Borreo. The sophomore is 7-4 overall and 6-3 from the No. 2 spot.

Martinez Roca found a 6-3, 6-1 win against Van Dyk at the top line. The No. 18 ranked junior holds a 4-1 record for the season while Van Dyk is 1-3 from the No. 1 position for the Lions.

Miret Avante notched his eighth victory of the season with his three-set battle at the fourth spot. The freshmen tallied a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 score over Rosello to earn an 8-1 record in his first year. Rosello falls to 2-3 for the year.

Westwick also posted a tough three-set battle at the third position. The junior secured a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 win against Ramchane to secure a 5-6 tally. The UAFS freshman drops to a 1-4 record.

 Charles Heffernan claimed his third consecutive victory. He overcame Nicolas Retamales at the fifth line by a 6-3, 6-1 score. The Mustang junior is 8-3 overall and 4-1 at the No. 5 spot.

Stefan Andrei sealed the win with his 7-6, 6-4 score at the sixth spot. The freshman beat out Eddleman to go 5-5 on the season. Eddleman sits at a 2-2 record.
Midwestern State ends their home stand on a high note as they take to the road for the next two weeks. The Mustangs face Southeastern Oklahoma State in a non-conference slate on Wednesday, March 23, in Durant, Okla. MSU takes on the Savage Storm at Southeastern Tennis Complex at 11 a.m.
