HEAD COACH JUSTIN LESLIE is in his third season at the helm of the Midwestern State men's basketball program. The Mustangs battled to an 8-21 mark in 2019-20 but closed the regular season by winning four out of five games to qualify for the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament. MSU also closed the 2020-21 regular season with four straight wins advancing the LSC Postseason Tournament for the second straight year with an 11-8 overall record. Prior to MSU, Leslie posted a 266-121 overall record (.687) at Azusa Pacific leading the Cougars to nine 20-win campaigns, two Pacific West Conference titles, seven postseason tournament appearance and an NCAA Division II Elite Eight showing in 2015. Overall, Leslie owns a 295-163 mark (.644) in 15 seasons as a collegiate head coach including a 29-42 record (.408) at MSU.
SCOUTING THE WNMU MUSTANGS
Western New Mexico sports a 10-8 record and is 3-5 in Lone Star Conference games... It is the first time the Mustangs have had a winning record 18 games into the season since they were 12-6 in their first season in NCAA Division II and it was the last year under the direction of WNMU legendary coach Dick Drangmeister... Western New Mexico has lost four of its last five games, but owns wins over Texas A&M-Commerce and Angelo State -- both came at home... WNMU is 2-5 in true road games this season... The Mustangs rank second in the LSC and 23rd in NCAA Division II forcing 16.69 turnovers per game... WNMU is third in the league and 45th nationally with 8.1 steals per game... Senior guard Jordan Doss ranks fourth in the LSC averaging 17.2 points per game shooting 40.7 percent from 3-point range (33-of-81)... Doss scored at least 20 points six times this season including a high of 37 against Oklahoma Christian (1/15)... Junior guard Tony Avalos scores 13.7 points and dishes out 2.9 assists per game... Avalos scored in double figures in his last four games and 13 times this season including a season high of 21 in WNMU's opener against Westminster (11/12)...
HEAD COACH ZANE GIBSON is off to a 10-8 start in his first season as a collegiate head coach at Western New Mexico. Gibson served time as an assitant coach on Josh Newman's staffs at UT Permian Basin and Arkansas-Fort Smith. As a player, Gibson helped Middle Tennessee State to four Sun Belt Conference titles.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Midwestern State and Western New Mexico meet for the 15th time on the hardwood Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. MSU owns a 12-2 edge in the series that dates back to the 1980-81 season. WNMU claimed a 98-88 win in overtime in the last meeting on Dec. 14, 2019 at Drag's Court in Silver City. Midwestern State has won all five meetings between te programs played at Ligon Coliseum.
