WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State is ready for two top-rated junior college opponents this week in Seward County Community College and Tyler Junior College. MSU hosts both matches at MSU Tennis Center.
The Mustangs take on the Saints on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. The team then faces the Apache on Friday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.
ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
The Mustangs collected a sweep over McMurry in their first match of 2022. The team took all seven points in the Jan. 28 match.
No. 4
Alex Martinez Roca and
Ben Westwick posted a 6-0 shutdown at the top doubles spot after going 11-2 in the fall semester. The duo claimed an ITA South Central Region title before registering two wins at the ITA Cup. They top the regional doubles rankings.
Martinez Roca, who became the first player in program history to earn an ITA Cup berth in both singles and doubles play in the same season, also gained a No. 15 single ranking. The senior from Castelldefels, Spain worked his way to a 9-5 record during the fall reaching the semifinal round of the ITA South Central Region Championship. He then reached the semifinal round of the ITA Cup. Martinez Roca is third in the regional singles ranks.
Brice Bradshaw and
Marcal Miret Avante teamed up for the win at No. 2 doubles against the WarHawks. Newcomers
Brandon Wall and
Charles Heffernan gained the 6-1 win at the final doubles round.
Bradshaw clinched his win at the top singles spot versus McMurry. The sophomore checked in at 19th in the South Central region singles list.
No. 50
Stefan Andrei gained a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the second line on Jan. 28. Andrei earned an ITA singles' ranking of 50th after racking up an 8-5 record advancing to the quarterfinal round of the ITA South Central Region Championship. The freshman ranks fifth in the ITA South Central Region Rankings.
Matthew Abbey cleaned up at the third singles line, as did
Jean Muniz at the fifth spot. Wall and Heffernan took 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles to claim the team victory.
THE MAN IN CHARGE
Scott Linn enters his 12th season at the helm of the Midwestern State men's and women's tennis programs in 2021-22 after guiding the Mustangs to 17 NCAA Tournament appearances since arriving in Wichita Falls in the fall of 2010. The Mustangs have thrived under Linn's leadership as he revived the program to the highest level. Under Linn, the men's program posted a 171-83 (.673) mark with seven NCAA Tournament appearances while advancing to the national quarterfinals in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019 after a five-year absence from the postseason.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS
Seward County CC came in at No. 3 in the NJCAA ITA Collegiate Poll after going 12-3 in the 2020-21 season. The team has yet to play a match in 2022 after three were postponed due to weather.
Sophomore Luciano Fisicaro and freshman Luke Quaynor rank seventh and eighth in the national list after making it to the semifinals of the singles draw of the Fall regional tournament. Sophomore Juan Gonzalez enters at No. 10 following a quarterfinal finish at regionals. No. 12 Karlo Krolo also made it to the quarterfinals.
Sophomores Kyllian Savary and Martins Abamu finish at the 15th and 27th ranks.
Krolo and Fisicaro are third in doubles after claiming the regional championship in the fall and finishing third at the ITA National Tournament. Sophomore Franco Vecchia pairs with Gonzalez to place tenth while Abamu and Savary are eleventh.
SCOUTING THE APACHE
Tyler Junior College earned the No. 1 ranking in the Feb. 3 NJCAA ITA Collegiate Poll after picking up the third straight national championship in 2021. The Dec. 3 poll saw six TJC players rank in the top 15 of the singles and doubles list.
Diego Dalisay ranked fourth in the national list to lead Tyler JC. The freshman recently claimed his No. 2 singles match at Cameron on Feb. 9 to help the team to a 5-2 win over the LSC opponent. He and Jacob Mosvold top the ITA doubles ranking after taking home a championship at the ITA Cup in October.
Mosvold is No. 18 in the junior college rankings for singles. The freshman clinched a three-set victory at the six spot against Cameron.
Emilio Vila comes in at No. 6 in the ITA poll. The freshman dropped two sets at Cameron against Tomas Almeida. He pairs with Ethan Dunn to rank 14th in the nation. Dunn earned an 11th place spot in the ITA rankings for singles. The freshman did not compete against Cameron on Feb. 9
Sophomore Alvaro Saint Martin rounds out the national list at No. 14. The Miramar, Argentina, native tallied a two-set victory at the fifth singles line against Cameron.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Midwestern State is 3-1 against Seward County CC, with all four matches taking place in Wichita Falls, Texas. MSU held a three-match win streak from 1991 to 2016 until the team fell to the Saints in 2017 by 4-5.
Tyler Junior College owns an 8-2 advantage over the Mustangs, currently on a six-match win streak since 2015. MSU is 2-4 when facing the Apache at home with the last win coming in 2014. Midwestern State's only other victory over TJC was a 5-4 win in 2013. The last time the two teams met at MSU Tennis Center, Tyler JC took a 6-1 win in 2020. The Mustangs fell 0-7 in 2021 in Tyler, Texas.

Midwestern State returns to Wichita Falls, Texas, with a full slate of matches against community colleges and junior colleges. First up is No. 3 Seward County Community College on Thursday, Feb. 17.
