OKLAHOMA CITY -- Five different players hit doubles and Kathyrn Wells fell one out shy of no-hitter to lead Midwestern State to a 11-1 run-rule win in five innings over Southwestern Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon at Tom Heath Field.
MSU (1-2) battered the Bulldogs with 11 hits including doubles by
Daylan Inkman,
Hanna Hetherington,
Bailey Brenek,
Kerris Cameron and
Mikey Dominguez on the way to claiming it first win of the season.
The five two-baggers were the most since the Mustangs hit six doubles against Northwestern Oklahoma State on March 19, 2019.
Ironically,
Kathryn Wells appeared in that game as a pinch hitter for the Rangers, but Saturday she was in a much bigger role for Midwestern State.
Wells recorded a career-high five strikeouts and held Southwestern Oklahoma State without a hit until Breanna Simmons grounded a single up the middle with two outs in the fourth inning. Wells finished off her second career win for MSU to improve to 1-0 in her first start of the 2022 campaign.
Hetherington and Brenek ignited the Mustangs with run-scoring doubles to fuel a three-run first inning, then Inkman and Cameron pulled off the same feat in a four-run second inning to push the MSU advantage to 7-0.
Hetherington added sacrifice flies in the second and third innings to finish game 1-for-2 at the plate with a team-high three RBIs.
The Mustangs tacked on two runs in the third and fourth innings to pull away for the run-rule victory.
Ashley Turner extended her streak of reaching base to seven straight game dating back to last season and recorded a hit in her fifth consecutive regular season game. The junior from Cache, Okla. went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
Inkman went 2-for-2 reaching base three times from the leadoff spot. She was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and had a sacrifice fly to drive in her second run of the game in the fourth.
Brenek also added two hits and drove in a pair of runs recording her second straight multi-hit performance.
Southwestern Oklahoma State pushed across an unearned run aided by two MSU errors to break up Wells' shutout bid in the fourth inning.
Midwestern State takes on Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon at Central Oklahoma's Gerry Pinkston Stadium. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
