DALLAS -- Midwestern State's magical run through the postseason ended with a 4-1 loss to No. 1-ranked Dallas Baptist in the LSC finals Sunday afternoon at Patriot Soccer Field.
The loss snapped a five match unbeaten run for the Mustangs, who close the season with a 9-9-2 record.
Dallas Baptist rolled to the postseason tournament title and claimed the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division II playoffs while improving to 16-1-1.
The Patriots dominated the stat sheet controlling a 30-8 edge in shots and an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks, while controlling possession of the ball for 62 percent of the game and almost half of that was in the attacking quarter.
DBU took advantage of good fortune in the opening 90 seconds when an apparent hand ball on a clearing pass out of the box was not detected. That ball deflected to Annie Severide, who centered a pass to Angelina Olmos for the opening goal of the match.
Just over two minutes later, the Mustangs received a break of their own when
Alyssa Salinas' corner kick serve to the middle of the box was banged around and eventually went into goal off of a DBU defender to tie the game at 1-1.
But Rachel Allen and Michelle Gonzalez scored goals in the 28th and 36th minutes, respectively, to stake the Patriots to a 3-1 halftime lead.
DBU tacked on a goal by Kaleigh Naizer in the 48th minute extending the margin early in the second half.
Midwestern State was unable to produce a shot on goal until late in the match.
Junior defender Janae Sanchez sent a cross into the center of the DBU box in the 88th minute that was punched out by reserve goalkeeper Breanna Brown.
The ball rolled to
Senna Garcia, who fired a shot toward the empty net that was cleared off the line by defender Emily Bates.
Sanchez was joined on the LSC Postseason Tournament team by
Olivia Okoye and
Lexi Beck.
