Midwestern State snapped an eight-game losing streak to West Texas A&M with a 100-90 overtime win over the Buffs Thursday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum... It was the Mustangs' first win over nationally ranked opponent since beating No. 9 St. Edward's 92-81 on Jan. 2, 2021 at Ligon Coliseum ending a seven-game losing streak against nationally ranked opponents... The victory also broke a string of four overtime losses dating back to an 88-82 victory in OT against Oklahoma Christian on Dec. 19, 2018... Midwestern State shot better than 50 percent from the field for the third time this season and for the second time in the last three games finishing the night at 55 percent (33-of-60) against WT... The Mustangs matched their best shooting night from 3-point range by going 14-of-26 (.538) against the Buffs and also shot 14-of-26 in their win over Central Oklahoma... MSU also set team season highs with 20 assists and nine blocked shots versus West Texas A&M... MSU improved to 4-4 on hits home floor at D.L. HEAD COACH JUSTIN LESLIE is in his third season at the helm of the Midwestern State men's basketball program. The Mustangs battled to an 8-21 mark in 2019-20 but closed the regular season by winning four out of five games to qualify for the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament. MSU also closed the 2020-21 regular season with four straight wins advancing the LSC Postseason Tournament for the second straight year with an 11-8 overall record. Prior to MSU, Leslie posted a 266-121 overall record (.687) at Azusa Pacific leading the Cougars to nine 20-win campaigns, two Pacific West Conference titles, seven postseason tournament appearance and an NCAA Division II Elite Eight showing in 2015. Overall, Leslie owns a 292-162 mark (.643) in 15 seasons as a collegiate head coach including a 26-41 record (.388) at MSU.
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
Cameron lost 89-53 at Dallas Baptist on Thursday to extend its losing streak to seven games while falling to 2-10 on the season and 0-6 in Lone Star Conference play... The Aggies beat Western New Mexico 82-77 in overtime for their last win on Dec. 2, 2021... Cameron is 0-6 on the road this season and have dropped their last nine away from Lawton dating back to last season... Junior Colt Savage leads a trio of Aggies scoring in double figures at 14.1 points per game... Savage shoots 44.6 percent from 3-point range (29-of-65) and has scored in double figures in 10-of-12 games this season including a season-high 25 points against Central Oklahoma (11/27)... Junior Brock Schreiner scores 11.8 points per game pouring in a season-high with 28 points earlier this season against Midwestern State (11/30)... Sophomore Connor Slater averages 10.1 points and a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game...
HEAD COACH JEFF MAHONEY took over the reins of the Cameron men's basketball program prior to the Aggies' game against UT Permian Basin on Jan. 20. He served as a women's basketball assistant at Cameron for Emma Andrews for a little over two seasons. Mahoney has 32 yards of coaching experience racking up 450 wins, 11 Oklahoma state tournament appearances and a state title at numerous stops in the state including Harrah High School, Lawton Eisenhower, Elgin, Cache, Snyder and Chattanooga. Mahoney graduated from Cameron in 1986 and earned two baseball letters with the Aggies.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Midwestern State and Cameron compete in the 85th edition of the Red River Rivalry Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs own a 53-30 edge in the series which dates back to the 1968-69 season and has won the last four meetings. MSU rolled to a 71-66 win earlier this season in Lawton powered by a pair of 19-point efforts by
Jermane Carter and
Jordan Teal. Midwestern State is 31-6 all-time against Cameron in games played at Ligon Coliseum including 17 consecutive wins from 1991-2015. The Aggies, however, claimed a 76-73 win in their last trip to Wichita Falls on Jan. 15, 2020.
