Red-hot Angelo State rolls past Mustangs, 98-72

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Turnovers catch up to Midwestern State as they drop their second conference game of the season despite Morgan Lenahan finding 28 points. Angelo State overcomes the Mustangs 98-72, scoring 30 points off turnovers. MSU owns a 7-6 record on the season and go 2-2 in Lone Star Conference play.
The Mustangs started out strong, banking three of the first six shots of the game. Markayla Johnson's free throw at 6:12 ended the two-minute scoreless streak for Midwestern State. The guard topped MSU with five assists on the night.

Angelo State kept close on three-pointers by three different players. The home side was four of four from range with 5:26 to play.

MSU's 8-0 run helped by shooting 58 percent in first quarter and holding ASU to 39 percent from the floor. The Belles led with 67 percent from range versus the Mustangs' four of seven performance. There were no free throws for home side while MSU knocked down five of six to lead 23-18.

Payton Brown and Sawyer Lloyd lead Belles with six and five points while Morgan Lenahan is four of six from the field and posted 14 points in the first ten minutes. Brown concluded the game with ten points and two steals. Lloyd was one of the top scorers for ASU with 16 points, eight assists and six steals.

Angelo State jumped back to the lead within one minute of second quarter on an Ashlynn Sharp three and layup-free throw combo by Blakely Gerber. Neither team was able to find the net for the next two minutes through turnovers and steals.

Sharp earned three of ASU's six takeaways and finished with ten points, shooting two of four from range.

There were no field goals for three minutes for MSU, which was ended by Lenahan with 29 seconds to play. Angelo State outscored Midwestern State 30-14 with the home side shooting 58 percent while MSU was 4-15 from the floor. Gerber put in 11, going four of six from the floor. The Nazareth, Texas, native led the Belles with 17 points, going seven of 11 from the field overall.

The Belles add nine quick into the third quarter to lead by 20. Shawinsay Millar clinched first two baskets for the visitors, finishing with eight points and four boards. The Mustangs entered another drought through three minutes as Angelo State started a 7-0 run over two minutes.

MSU completed five of ten from the field for the half and held Angelo to one of last eight shots to maintain 20-point deficit through the third. Hannah Reynolds completed six points in the quarter and was second on the team with 12. The senior added three blocks and two steals on the night.

Stephens led the Belles with five points, going three of four from the line. The guard recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

In the final period of the night, Eternity Jackson turned in eight points, going three of five from the field and two of three from range. Through the match, Midwestern State accumulated 25 turnovers while Angelo State completed 19 steals and scored 62 points in the paint.
