Mustangs stun No. 5 Texas A&M-Commerce, 31-30

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Midwestern State has made a habit of pulling out miraculous wins against rival Texas A&M-Commerce.

The Mustangs added another impressive chapter to that old book Saturday night at Choctaw Stadium.

MSU erased a 23-point first-half deficit to stun the No. 5-ranked Lions 31-30.

And it was a pair of freshman that put the comeback in motion late after Texas A&M-Commerce roared out to a 23-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Freshman cornerback Dylon Davis returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown to put the Mustangs on the board with 5:30 to go in the first half. It was his second pick six in as many weeks.

Then freshman Ritse Vaes booted a 42-yard field right before halftime to pull MSU to within 23-10.

Texas A&M-Commerce extended the lead to 30-10 after Eric Rodriguez' scrambled into the end zone from one yard out to culminate a six-play, 76-yard drive.

The Midwestern State defense limited the Lions to just 33 total yards the rest of the game allowing the Mustangs' offense to take control.

MSU quarterback Dillon Sterling-Cole hit Kylan Harrison for a 6-yard touchdown on the next possession to polish off a 12-play, 60-yard drive which took up 5:24.

Then the Mustangs marched 99 yards on 16 plays spanning nearly 8 minutes bridging the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth to pull within a single score after Ja'Marzeyea Arvie scored on a 2-yard reception from Sterling-Cole with 10:01 to play.

Midwestern State continued its stellar play on defense by forcing the Lions to punt for the third straight possession to give the offense the ball at midfield with 6:19 to play.

The Mustangs needed a pair of fourth-down conversions to keep he drive and comeback hopes alive.

Sterling-Cole complete a 20-yard post route to Anthony Tennison on a fourth-and-9 from the Texas A&M-Commerce 34-yard line, then freshman Jalen March bullied his way to a 4-yard game on fourth-and-4 to setup first-and-goal from the 3.

Three plays later, Sterling-Cole hit Sam Hodges for a 5-yard touchdown with 25 seconds to play and Vaez converted a clutch PAT to put the Mustangs ahead.

Sterling-Cole competed 16-of-26 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns to pace the MSU attack, while March had 44 yards on 17 carries to lead the rushing attack.

Davis starred on defense scoring on the interception return, while also breaking up a pass, forcing a fumble and making a stop for loss.

Junior linebacker Justin Guillory made eight tackles and recorded a sack for a 13-yard loss.

It was the Mustangs fourth come-from-behind win over Texas A&M-Commerce in the last seven years.

MSU overcame a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Lions 40-37 in overtime in 2014.

The Mustangs scored two touchdowns in 15 seconds to erase a nine-point Texas A&M-Commerce lead with less than seven minutes to play as MSU used a 4-yard interception return by Harold Wills with 6:14 to for a 37-33 win in the LSC Postseason Playoff title game.
