WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State held tight to West Texas A&M in both Friday night matches at Mustangs Park. The No. 12 ranked team only overtook MSU by four and three runs in the Mustangs' holistic performance. The two games put the team at 7-7 prior to the last home double header.
In game one against the Lady Buffs, Midwestern State struck early in the second to take a 1-0 lead. After
Payton Griffin walked,
Marley Eller brought her to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Maddy Holder pushed the sophomore home on her sacrifice fly to center field.
The lead did not last long as WT grabbed two runs in the third. Neither team notched any runs in the fourth. The visitors went on to put up a run in each of the remaining three innings.
The Mustangs narrowly avoided giving up a no-hitter to Kyra Lair, who prevented a hit through six innings. Eller came in clutch with a double to right field on the last strike of the game. The junior put up the only hit for her team in the match with her 14th hit of the season.
Lair collected ten strikeouts for West Texas A&M and two walks in 25 faced batters.
Kaitlyn Turner recorded five strikeouts, the most since the team's March 10 battle against Southeastern Oklahoma. This was the first time the freshman pitched a full game since late February.
Game two began in opposite fashion with the Lady Buffs scoring early. The team put two on the scoreboard in the first inning. The last three points were from the second inning and WT was done for the match.
Eller grabbed MSU's first hit with a single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth. Holder followed up with a single to right field to continue the Mustang rally. Kamrynn Burk's third hit of the year came as a single to center field to load the bases.
Carson Solis' single and sixth RBI allowed Holder to score to put Midwestern State on the board.
Daylan Inkman added another on a throwing error by West Texas A&M.
Down by only three, the home side searched for the tying runs. Griffin attempted with a single to left field in the bottom of the sixth, but was left stranded.
Haley Butler's third season hit on the last strike kept the Mustangs in it for a bit longer. Eventually, WT ended the match and took the W.
Addi Hanna pitched her first full, seven-inning game allowing five runs on five hits with one walk in 30 batters faced. Her counter parts in Emilee Wilson and Halle Lytal combined for one strikeout and two runs on six hits with one walk.
The Mustangs take part in their last home games of the 2021 season on Sunday, April 18 against Eastern New Mexico. The finale at Mustangs Park begins at 12 and 2 p.m. Live stats, video, and ticket links are available online.
