WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State Softball had a thrilling end to their two game series against UT Permian Basin on Friday, March 5. The Mustangs grabbed the first LSC game 3-2 by holding the Falcons scoreless in the last two innings at Mustangs Park. The second game was a 7th inning miracle with a walk-off single by
Hanna Hetherington to clutch victory.
The first game, though less thrilling, was still great for Midwestern State.
Jacey Henry started on the mound for her sixth start of the season. She pitched all seven innings for the Mustangs and allowed only four hits. UTPB garnered two runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Henry started the offense for MSU with a double to right center in the bottom of the first, pushing
Ashley Turner home. Henry then scored off
Bailey Brenek's right side single, making the score 2-0.
Brenek then scored the game winning run later in the third inning. Her double that placed her on base was her second of the season. After
Payton Griffin reached on a fielding error,
Anna Williams fouled out to third base, allowing Brenek to score.
The second match did not start as the Mustangs would have hoped. The Falcons were up on the board in the second inning off a muffed throw. They then scored again in the third.
The fourth inning was a nightmare for MSU with UT Permian Basin putting up four more runs and gaining a 6-0 lead.
Midwestern State registered the first score of the game with a Hetherington sacrifice fly. Henry scored and put one up for the Mustangs. The sixth was similar with Hetherington grounding out to second base, allowing
Mattye Tyler to score. Tyler had two hits, two runs, and one RBI from four at bats.
Down by four, the final inning was the only hope for the home team. It started with Tyler's single to center field that led
Carson Solis to score. Solis put down one run and two hits in the second game.
Brenek's single pushed in Tyler and Turner to put MSU down by one until Hetherington came to the rescue. The freshman singled to right field and both Griffin and Brenek scored for the win.
The team moves to 9-3 for the season and 2-0 in conference play.
The Mustangs have another home series this weekend, this time versus Western New Mexico. The Lone Star Conference games will take place at Mustangs Park on Sunday, March 7, at 12 and 2 p.m.
