Bourne double double leads Mustangs in sweep of Aggies

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State volleyball went out of their last regular season home game in style. The team grabbed the first two sets (25-20, 25-10), let Cameron win the next two (25-17, 25-22), and then came back to destroy in the final set (15-5).

The final 3-2 score sealed the sweep for the Mustangs on Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

"It was a big team effort," Head Coach Valerie Armstrong said. "Depending on the rotation and what was coming at us, different people stepped up at different times."

One of the biggest was Lauryn Bourne who had 12 kills and two assists. The freshman also registered four block assists for MSU and led both teams with 20 digs.

"Lauren Bourne had a nice match with the double double," Armstrong said.

Between the two games against Cameron on Wednesday and Thursday, Bourne made 20 kills and 30 digs. She leads the team in kills per set with 2.81.

Also coming in hot for Midwestern State was Lissette Lefforge. The middle hitter also made 12 kills, along with a .409 hitting percent, her best percent of the season. Lefforge led the Mustangs with six block assists, another season-high for the senior. She recorded two of the team's seven service aces.

"Our middles came in hard to hold so that we could open up," Armstrong explained.

The other middle blocker, Alyssa Estrada-Hamby, put down nine kills and two block assists.

Although the first two sets went for the Mustangs, the third and fourth were not welcomed.

"I told them to play as hard as they could," Armstrong said. "The biggest thing is controlling what we can, playing our game and our tempo, and hitting our shots. That is what they did and played well in the fifth."

MSU destroyed Cameron in the fifth allowing only five points for the opposition.

Kaitlyn Masseth's serving was imperative in the final four points to keep the Aggies at bay. The setter had 24 assists for the night and 11 digs. Her counterpart, setter Autumn Roach, led both teams with 26 assists. She added 8 digs and two aces.

Taylor Anderson put in work on the right side for the Mustangs. The junior made 11 kills and a .500 hitting percent, her best of the season. In addition, she had three digs and one block assist to end the night.

The team's performance propelled them to the most block assists (16) and best team hitting percent (.236) they have had in their 13 total games.

"Just being consistent on our side of the court is controllable," Armstrong denoted. "That is what we did in the first and second sets. Then we bounced back in the fifth and that was a great comeback. I am proud of the team for winning in five."

After the clutch comeback, Midwestern State heads to Fort Smith, Arkansas, to take on the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith in the last two games of the regular season. The Tuesday and Wednesday matches both kick-off at 6 p.m. at the Stubblefield Center.
