Amann brace lifts Mustangs over LCU in first LSC match

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – A Trevor Amann brace and additional score by Mere Escobar put Midwestern State soccer up 3-0 against Lubbock Christian in the team's first Lone Star Conference match-up of the season. The Tuesday night game at Stang Park puts the Mustangs at 2-0 for the spring season.

"I think that what we have tried to do for a long time since I have been here is try to get the ball in one v one areas and channels to get the ball served in the box," Head Coach Michael Meachum explained. "I think we did a good job of that today."

Midwestern State started strong with Colby Parton taking his defender on along the right sideline to swing a ball into the feet of Amann in the 13th minute.

"Trevor did well with the touch and was fortunate enough to get a good goal off of it," Meachum said.

Shortly before halftime, MSU struck again, this time from freshman Escobar's strike. A quick throw in gave Yogi Vargas space down the same right side line. A dummy allowed Brandon Martinez-Trelles to get into space in LCU's box and make a short pass to Escobar, who curled the ball into the net past Braxton Thorne.

Thorne played all 90 minutes for Lubbock Christian and recorded seven saves total.

The rest of the half went smoothly for the Mustangs and they headed into the locker room up by two.

"The third one was off of a throw in and we had a quick combo and third man run from Trevor coming in a little bit deeper," Meachum described. "He was able to take a touch and score."

Amann's second goal rode the ground straight into the lower left hand side of the goal with Thorne not able to get a hand on it. The forward totaled two goals on three shots on goal for the night.

The Mustangs registered 18 total shots for the game while the Chaps got to four. The home side put out six corners and only gave up two.

Between the posts, Marc-Antoine Huzen made three saves in 90 minutes. The keeper recorded his second shutout of the season.

"I think it is good if we can keep getting the ball outside-in, I think we are going to do a lot of good things," Meachum said. "We'll cause people some problems."

The Mustangs will look to cause problems in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Saturday, March 6, when they take on Oklahoma Christian. The Lone Star Conference match will kick off at 5:30 p.m. on the Eagle Soccer Field.
