Big first half excels Mustangs over Hardin-Simmons in season opener

ABILENE, Texas – Midwestern State started the season off with a bang after ripping in seven goals against Hardin-Simmons on Wednesday night at Hardin-Simmons Soccer Complex. Six different goal scorers tallied their name on the score sheet for the Mustangs.

Senior Rory O'Keeffe started the party with a boot in the third minute following a Mustang free kick. Fellow defender Tristian Adams notches his first assist for MSU.

Midfielder Carlos Flores registered two shots in the sixth and 12th minutes before upping the score 2-0. Julian Barajas gets the assist.

Junior Toi Yamaoka drilled two of his three total shots at Hardin-Simmons keeper Reid Applewhite to force to saves. A few minutes later, senior forward Trevor Amann notched his sixth career goal for Midwestern State off a ball from Jasub Flores. This is Flores' first point as a Mustang.

Cowboys' Jakob Fiol recorded two shots that were wide of Marc-Antoine Huzen's net. MSU's keeper did not make any saves in the full 90 minutes.

Midwestern State would not strike again until the 39th minute when Victor Rubio Lopez yanked one in unassisted. The Mustangs were up by four with seven minutes to play.

Yogi Vargas ended the half with a penalty kick goal after a foul by Hardin-Simmons keeper. The forward was one for his two shots on goals for the evening. MSU ended up 12-3 on shots and 3-0 on corners when the halftime whistle blew.

The Cowboys switched keepers shortly into the second half, with Daniel Rodriguez taking the place between the poles. The home squad totaled 15 fouls for the game, with ten in the later half.

Fortunately, it did not distraught the visitors because Amann put in his second of the night with Erwin Regules with the assist.

MSU added three more corner kicks until Regules got his own kicker from senior defender Nathan Clifford. 21 shots, 11 corners and 5 fouls by Midwestern State highlighted the 7-0 route. Hardin-Simmons had eight total saves and seven shots.

The Mustangs will head to Dallas, Texas, on Saturday, Feb. 27, to take on Dallas Baptist at DBU Patriot Soccer Field. Kick-off slated for 5:30 p.m. for the non-conference match.
