WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Three trends to continued Monday night at D.L. Coliseum.
UT Tyler senior Esyan Wiley continued to shoot lights out even hitting three consecutive 3-pointers during a decisive 13-2 run midway through the second half.
Meanwhile, Midwestern State just couldn't buy a bucket from beyond the arc misfiring on all 14 tries in the second half.
It all added up to a 75-63 win for the Patriots, who matched the best start in school history at 7-0. UT Tyler has now won 17 of its last 18 games dating back to last season.
"The ball is definitely not getting the ball in the basket right now," MSU coach
Justin Leslie said. "The story of the game. Wiley is a 52-percent free throw shooter coming into the game. Give him credit, he made enough shots down the stretch and he went 3-for-3 from 3 during the decisive run. We couldn't get the ball to go in the basket."
Midwestern State put together one of its best stretches of the season by closing the last six minutes of the first half on an extended 22-4 run highlighted by junior
Terrell Wilson who hit a pair of 3-pointers to score 12 points during the stretch.
John Weger punctuated the run by converting a three-point play in transition to turn a 12-point deficit into a 36-30 lead 15 seconds before halftime.
"The last eight minutes of the first half, we had one turnover. We valued the ball and we made a couple of shots," Leslie said. "Our offense is designed to get those shooters inside-out looks and we got them. But in the second half, we couldn't buy a bucket."
But Wiley scored 11 consecutive points for UT Tyler as part of a 13-2 run which included three consecutive triples to stake the Patriots to a 59-46 lead with 8:55 to play.
Wiley finished with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting which actually lowered his season shooting percentage to 70 percent. He closed out the game going 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 71 seconds of the game.
Junior forward Milan Szabo added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Patriots.
The Mustangs, who were already playing without
Derrick Ogechi and
Pierre Sanders, also had
Luke Hamilton exit the game with an injury in the second half.
"We have certainly had a tough go when it comes to having our full roster availability," Leslie said. "There are no excuses. Nobody is going to cut us any slack. They are going to come in here and take it away from us every opportunity they get. We have to be prepared to compete. We had the recipe tonight and we just weren't able to handle it consistently in that second half. As a result, Tyler came in and got the win. They are a good team and they are playing well right now."
Wilson paced the Mustangs with 18 points and six assists, while senior
Jermane Carter added 15 points. Redshirt freshman
Jordan Teal notched his third double-figure game of the season going for 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting.
Midwestern State finished the game going 4-of-27 from 3-point range (14.8 percent) but managed to shoot 20-of-33 from inside the arc (60 percent).
"There is a lot of maturity and toughness that we have to continue to develop," Leslie said. "We've had a rough go."
Midwestern State (4-6) battles Texas A&M-Commerce in a non-conference game Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
