Meanwhile, Texas A&M-Commerce rode its best team shooting performance of the season to a convincing 73-48 win.
The Lions ripped the nets at a 68-percent clip after halftime hitting eight of its 13 3-point attempts to outscore MSU 44-17 in the second half.
Texas A&M-Commerce took control of the game by ripping off 14 consecutive points midway through the second half extending its lead to 53-36 on Augustine Ene's dunk in transition to 9:39 to play.
Midwestern State went nearly eight minutes without a field goal beginning just prior to the decisive run.
The Mustangs managed just six second-half field goals on 34 attempts to 17.6 percent and hit just two of their 24 shots from beyond the arc (8.3 percent).
MSU fared much better in the opening half going 10-of-23 from the field (43.5 percent) and 7-of-14 from 3-point range to take a 31-29 lead into the break.
Senior Alphonso Willis scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Texas A&M-Commerce which improved to 7-1 on the season.
Junior JJ Romer Rosario hit five of his 3-point attempts for 15 points.
Midwestern State freshman
Jordan Teal went 7-of-14 from the field to lead the Mustangs with 15 points, while junior
Terrell Wilson added 10 points.
Senior forward
Jermane Carter scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds, while senior
Jalin Brown snagged a game-high 10 boards.
Midwestern State and Texas A&M-Commerce meet in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams on New Year's Eve in Commerce. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
