Texas A&M-Commerce upsets Mustangs in LSC quarterfinals, 3-2

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- For the second straight year, Midwestern State dropped out of the Lone Star Conference Tournament in the quarterfinal round. This year's disheartening defeat came at the hands of Texas A&M-Commerce, the seventh-seed of the tournament. The Lions responded on Lexi Beck's and Alyssa Salinas' first half goals and added their own in the second. MSU concludes the season at 12-4-3.

Beck etched her name in the scorebook early with her 6:03 goal. The midfielder notched her third goal of the season to sit eight points in her freshman campaign.

The Lions pushed in their own tally less than ten minutes later. Melissa Storey brought the equalizer against Lauren Freeman in the 14th minute.

Both teams fought on in the quarterfinal match until Salinas' long range shot sailed over Jen Peters head. The defender completed her second goal of the year to gain seven points.

The Lions' two leading scorers in Leslie Campuzano and Karalie Morrison turned things around quickly with another goal at 21:51, this time against Taylor Camp. Tied at two apiece, neither team found the back of the net for the rest of the period. TAMUC attempts 12 shots in the first half with Freeman making one save and Camp collecting three. The Mustangs owned five shots to push Peters to one stop.

Texas A&M-Commerce finished off the match on Cora Welch's bounce around goal in the 67th minute. Though MSU pushed offensively and recorded three second half shots, it was not enough. Peters finished the match with two saves while Camp tallied four stops.

Though it is the end of LSC play for Midwestern State, the team does have a chance to advance to the NCAA tournament through the South Central Region. The top six teams advance and MSU was last ranked at seven on Nov. 4. There is one more ranking release scheduled to drop later this week. The last time the Mustangs made it to regionals was in 2017.
